Harav Hachasid Rabbi Sholom Dov Ber Sanowicz, renowned Talmid Chocham, Shochet and Mohel, has passed away on Shabbos, 5 Kislev, just shy of his 94th birthday.
His father, Harav Hachasid Chaim Yitzchok, HY’D was sent to Odessa by the Frierdiker Rebbe to strengthen the chassidim of Odessa, where he was born. At the height of communist persecution, he was sent with Mesiras Nefesh – at a very young age – to Tomchei Temimim in Kutaisi, Georgia together with his brother R’ Azriel A”H.
Later, he went on to become a Talmid Muvhak of the Mashpia R’ Nissen Nemanov, in Brunoy, where he was one of the founding bochurim. He devoted himself in his later years to publishing R’ Nissen’s Biurim on Tanya, which he had transcribed as his Talmid. He later became a Shochet upon the request of the Frierdiker Rebbe.
Although he arrived in the USA with nothing, he became successful in business, which he entered upon the recommendation of the Rebbe. He recently founded a generous Gmach for Shluchim.
He was passionate in his quest and devotion for learning, and rarely was found without a Sefer in hand. In his later years, he gave Shiurei Gemarah in various Shuls in Crown Heights and was a Maggid Shiur in Yeshiva Chovevei Torah.
In addition to his sefer on R’ Nissan’ Biurim on Tanya, he recently published a Sefer, Maaseh Sholam, based on his Chidushim and Shiurim. A noted Baal Tefillah, he davened for many years by the Amud at 770 before the Rebbe. His life personified Torah and Tefillah until his last day.
He leaves behind a distinguished legacy of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a family of illustrious Roshei Yeshivos, Shluchim, and Mechanchim who follow in his ways.
He is survived by his dear wife, Mrs. Sarah E. Sanowicz (nee Lokshin) and his children, Rabbi Chaim Yitzchok Sanowicz (Los Angeles), Rabbi Nachman Sanowicz (Crown Heights), Mrs. Hindy Kalmenson, (New Haven) Mrs. Reevy Pevzner (Paris), Mrs. Rashi Itkin (Scranton), Rabbi Zalmy Sanowicz (Crown Heights), Rabbi Yossi Sanowicz (Montreal), Mrs. Chanie Hertz (Bensonhurst, NY) and Mrs. Dinie Gorman (Toronto), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The Levaya will take place at Shomrei Hadas, Sunday 11:30, and will pass by 770 at 12:30 pm.
The family will be sitting Shiva at 622 Empire Blvd.

R’ sholem Ber, Was the gabai in our minyan in Lefferts shul. I was zoche to get aliyah from him this past Monday. He would give the hadran at our yearly siyum hashas in shul. He was full with Torah. From time to time I would pop in to Ksav Sofer and see him, listening to the shiurim and farbrengens from YBCLC Harav Nissen Mangel. In the afternoon you can find him learning there as well. What tzi’or of chosid, to see someone in his nineties excited about chazering a mammor or giving a shiur. So much to learn from.… Read more »

He was a Baal Korah @ one of the Bungalow……so so clear & word for word. He was a tzadik. He was just no one who you can never ever forget….
We will miss him dearly. He has a very special spot in Gan Eden. I’m telling you.
R’ Sholom Ber Odessa was a Magnificent
Person. He was one of a kind.
He illuminated Ksav Sofer with his unabated learning. Never met a person who had a love for learning Torah like
R’ Sholom Ber. His shoes will be tough to fill. He was also a Great Chazan. He will be missed @ 770, Ksav Sofer and Lefferts Shul.
We miss you already, dear Zaidy! We learned so much from you, and your legacy of passion for Torah and the Rebbe’s mivtzaim lives on. Waiting to see you again with Moshiach speedily! -Your granddaughter in E’Y
We met by accident many years ago in the country. My younger daughter was by herself in my car, and it started rolling, Rabbi Shanowicz was in his car and saw what was happening and intercepted my car with his, making a nice big dent in the side of his car. I sat in front of him in Lefferts shul for many years, and (almost) always remembered to move to the side so he could see the chazzan by kedusha.
I will miss him greatly when I’m in Crown Hgts.
The shul won’t be the same without him.
BDE
