Rabbi Shlomo Segal, who has been teaching at the Oholei Torah Beis Medrash (Zal) in Crown Heights for 33 years, announced his resignation this month.
In a letter to Oholei Torah, Rabbi Segal wrote that he learned of the plans of the administration of Oholei Torah to reshuffle its teaching staff.
This includes rumors that many long-time Mashpiim from the Yeshiva’s Mesivta will be let go at the end of the school year.
“I therefore ask your permission to end my tenure in the Yeshiva at the end of the 5779 school year,” he wrote on Thursday, Lag BaOmer.
Rabbi Segal said that his decision was also motivated by the growing needs of the Jewish community in Crown Heights.
In 5766, Rabbi Segal was voted in as a member of the Crown Heights Beis Din (Badatz CHK). The election has since been contested.
“It seems to me that the time has come to respond to the many requests of residents here to dedicate more time to guiding, ruling and strengthening the boundaries of kashrus,” he said of his plans.
Oholei Torah’s Dean Rabbi Yosef Rosenfeld accepted the resignation in a letter dated 25 Iyar 5779 and thanked him for his many years of dedication to the bochurim.
Rabbi Rosenfeld added a request that Rabbi Segal continue to visit the Beis Medrash “from time to time” to deliver shiurim in Gemara, Halacha and Chassidus.

Its a loss to ohalei torah but a gain to crown hts as he will be more available to deal with questions. We certainly can use another rav being available to answer and advise us
Sorry for OT bochurim to have him leave, however the community will benefit having a competent, level headed rov take a more active roll will IYH be a positive thing
who else is being shuffled in the staff?
instead of having to call overseas rabbonim, we will now have another local rav available for Piskei Dinim and guidance.
One of the only shiurim I have attended that was able to understand what the maguid shiur wanted.
Rabbi Segal has a stellar reputation for being such a fair rav! Even when he represent a family member, he does not behave as if he is their relative but rather as an unbiased leader! His reputation precedes him. People who have him sitting on their din Torah cannot stop to sing his praises.
Sad news
Sad indeed. We would love him in Yerushalayim. He is such a Gadol with a great name.MHM loved him and of course still does.
