Rabbi Pinchas Doron-Spalter, a scholar and Professor of Jewish Studies who wrote an encyclopedia on the Talmud, passed away on Friday, 29 Av, 5779.
Rabbi Pinchas Doron-Spalter and his brother, Rabbi Shmuel Spalter, survived the Holocaust as orphan refugees. They later learned in Schneider’s Yeshiva in Britain.
Rabbi Pinchas spent several years in Kibbutz Lavi and the IDF, followed by Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
He migrated for some time to the US, living in the Kensington neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.
He graduated his PhD at New York University and served as Professor of Hebraic/Jewish Studies at City University of New York for many years.
He authored various seforim, including “Pilulei Pinchas,” a commentary on the Siddur with an introduction for each prayer, discussing origins, author and significance, as well as many Seforim on Rashi, in which he elucidated difficult-to-understand passages of Rashi’s commentary on the Torah.
Rabbi Doron-Spalter also spent many years compiling a summarized translation of the Talmud in his sefer “Major Concepts of the Talmud,” in which he explains the major concepts found in the Talmud with easy-to-understand terminology and clear examples.
After he retired, he returned to Israel, and lived in Jerusalem.
He is survived by his children, Rabbi Yoel Doron – Melbourne, Sholom Doron – Brooklyn, Tzvi Yosef Doron – Brooklyn, Mrs. Gitty Cikk – Israel, and Sori Doron – Brooklyn, as well as Shai Sassone, Ahuva Sassone and Leora Sassone and family.
He is also survived by his brother, Rabbi Shmuel Spalter of Florida.
He was predeceased by his wife and son Benyomin obm.
Baruch Dayan Ha’emes.
His children go by the last name “Doron”.
Additionally, I don’t know if that is him passing before the Rebbe. There is a well known picture of him passing by dollars with a full beard presenting his seforim on Rashi to the Rebbe.
Where will they be sitting Shiva?
Rabbi Pinchas Doron-Spalter did indeed have a beard, but those pictures were taken at a later date. The picture is indeed of Rabbi Pinchas Doron-Spalter before he began wearing his beard.

Not all of his kids are Doron as indicated. He is also survived by his wife, Dr Vivienne Damelin
