Rabbi Meir Yehuda Yisroel Harlig, a Gabbai of 770 who served as a meshamesh for the Rebbe, passed away Sunday, 29 Sivan, 5783.
He was 86.
Rabbi Harlig was the person responsible for giving the Rebbe’s Lulav and Esrog to the Chasidim in order to bless them on the days of Sukkos, and he was also in charge of inviting the participants to the holiday meals in the Rebbe’s apartment.
Over the years he was in charge of the drink and food for the Rebbe’s Farbrengens, and for this purpose he was given a room in the first floor corridor of 770, where he stored them.
One of the most known roles that Reb Meir filled was organizer and master of ceremonies at many farbrengens that Chassidim held in 770.
In recent years, he served as a 770 Gabbai who was in charge of the prayers held in the Rebbe’s room.
He was born in Elul 1936 in Zurich, Switzerland. His father, Rabbi Mordechai Harlig, served as a rav in Vienna in the years prior to World War II. The family arrived in the United States in 5700, and Rabbi Mordechai took up a position as a rav of a shul in Crown Heights.
R’ Meir studied at the Central Tomchei Temimim yeshiva 770. In his youth, he was privileged to serve on various errands for the Rebbe and began lending a helping hand at the holiday meals that were held in the Rebbe’s apartment, as well as serving as a member of the Vaad Hamesader.
He formed close ties with the Rebbe’s secretary Rabbi Yehuda Leib Groner and worked together with him on many matters and was helpful in everything that was needed. As a young man he wanted to learn Shechita, but at the Rebbe’s directive he did not pursue it.
After his marriage to his wife Tzipora, he established his residence in Crown Heights, and became a fixture in 770 and Crown Heights. His children serve as Shluchim around the world.
He is survived by his wife, Tzipora, and children Rabbi Sholom Ber Harlig – Upland, CA, Rabbi Shea Harlig – Las Vegas, NV, Chaya Sara Dalfin – North Bay Village, FL, Rabbi Yossi Harlig – Kendall, FL, Rabbi Mendy Harlig – Henderson, NV, Toby Baron – Sunny Isles, FL, and Binie Holtzberg – Monterey, CA, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The Levaya will take place on Monday, passing 770 at 2:00PM and continuing on to Montefiore Cemetery.

I’m so sorry to hear that! Over so many years he was such a good friend and a special down to earth mensch. The first Rebbe’s Lulav I got from him. I’m sure he will have much nachas ruach from all his children and grandchildren serving in the Rebbes Armee and bekorov we will all dance together again in the streets of yerushalaim into the bes hamikdosh hashlishi.
I remember him fondly, being such a dedicated fixture by The Rebbe, ZY”A; 24/7, during my year in 770 and beyond, in the late 80’s. יהא זכרו ברוך

How many yiden b’alei teshuva were at his Shabbos table!
He was also a shadchan
yes
All of his children are on shlichus!!
Rabbi Harlig exemplified a Chassid of the Rebbe. He was completely devoted; 770 was his whole world. I will never forget the Passover Seders at his table, conducted with true royalty. May his neshama be re-connected at last with the Rebbe’s; may he be seated among all his peers at the celestial farbrengen, may he help bring Moshiach now!
This news saddens me as I’m only 10 years younger than Rabbi Harlig. Us boys had lots of fun with him in Gan Yisrael late 50’s . I’m not exact sure as what his actual job was in Swan Lake he seemed to be omnipresent
What a sweet man he was. A rare spirit in the halls of Lubavitch. He valued, honored, fostered and exemplified happiness, goodness, and camaraderie without criticizing, shteching, improving… Had no problem accepting suggestions.
(I think he was the cake man for the Rebbe’s farbrengen table).
His sukka experiences. The library wine lightweight laugh ins….
Ah. I’ll try to continue celebrating him and his spirit.
May his loved ones be continually warmed by memories.
I ate shabbos meals with him 20 years ago.
An amazing collection of tanya editions
A fine mentsch togeher his wife, gave us so much encouragement and wonderful inspiring stories of his service to the Rebbe
Was an expert Shadchan!!!!!
I am a BT from after Gimmel Tammuz and R’ Harlig treated me with great respect upstairs in 770…

Truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met.
They are leaving us one by one. Why is this happening? (not to be answered) How can we keep up a strong momentum of courage and Joy? How can we keep up our hope and strong convictions? We feel as though we are floundering in a sea of litter and waste. Rebbe we miss you sooo much! Life is not the same anymore as it was before Tishrei תשלח. The only way we CAN keep up the MOMENTUM & HOPE is if we picture to ourselves how one by one each Mazkir and each one of the Rebbe’s helpers (for… Read more »
We are so sorry to read this sad news. We personally have fond memories of many positive interactions with Rabbi Harlig, and with Morah Tzipporah, who was an incredible teacher.
