Reb Meyer Barber, one of the pillars of the Sydney Jewish community, passed away.
He was 86.
Born in Galicia, Poland, Reb Meyer survived the war together with his father and brother in Siberia.
His father, Reb Beirsh Barber, consulted his Rebbe, Reb Itzikel of Pshevorsk (later of Antwerp) whether they should move to Australia.
He responded that since the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe had recently sent 6 families to strengthen Yiddishkeit in Australia, they too can travel and settle there. He blessed them with ‘Dor Yeshorim U’Mevoroch’!
He was one of the pillars of the Sydney Jewish community, and one of the founders of the Yeshiva Centre.
He built the first public Menorah in Sydney and was known for his acts of Chesed and his profound love of every Yid.
He is survived by his wife, Esther, and his children, Yitzchok – Sydney, Yacov – Crown Heights, Miri Gestetner – Sydney and Laya Slavin – Sydney.
His was Zoche that many of his children and grandchildren are shluchim of the Rebbe throughout the world.
