R’ Yaakov Kalman Winter, a longtime Crown Heights resident and successful businessman, passed away on Shabbos, 20 Shvat, 5780.
He was 86.
R’ Winter was born to his parents Rabbi Alter Yehoshua Hakohen and Mrs. Hinda Golda Winter, and was raised in a home full of Chassidishkeit in McKeesport, PA.
In later years, they moved to Crown Heights, where they were known for their open home and chesed. His mother was involved in founding branches of the women’s Chevra Kadisha such as in Miami and in Crown Heights, which she led for many years.
Even though the Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka passed away after she was old and frail and had nearly retired, the Rebbe requested that she do the Tahara for the Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, giving her something to include with the burial.
After R’ Yankel’s marriage to his wife, Chasya Shifra (nee Paulner), they settled in Crown Heights. They merited to have yechidus with both the Frierdiker Rebbe and the Rebbe.
A successful businessman, R’ Yankel was a very humble person, who helped many in his quiet way and privately doing many acts of kindness, without any fanfare.
He is survived by his wife Chasya and children, Rochel Serebryanski – Crown Heights, Mendy Winter – Crown Heights, Chanie Fettman – Seagate, NY, and Nechama Dina Bogomilsky – Pomona, NY.
He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Chaya Gansburg of Crown Heights.
The levaya will take place tomorrow at 1 pm at Shomrei Hadas, passing by 770 at 2 pm.

We were their neighbors growing up. He was always so friendly and positive.
Moshiach now!
Yakov and his wife, Chasya helped bring our family to yiddishkeit when I was a little girl. They welcomed us into their family as their very own. Yakov will always be a part of making me who I am today. Baruch Dayan Emes.

B”H. BDE. Kind, warm, friendly, and giving family. Our hearts are heavy as Yankel A”H will be greatly missed. May Hashem comfort Chasya, a regal woman, and their wonderful children…Moshiach Now!
Yankel and Chasya always welcomed me to their beautiful, warm house. We would always talk for long periods of time about our family history, CHABAD history, and Judaism. He would periodically call me to see how I was doing and fill me in on family Simchas or to connect me to relatives on the west coast. I always saw him as the conduit between my secular childhood and my large Chassidic extended (literal) family. Therefore, he was a great influence in shaping me and was a source of great pride for me. I just checked my phone and noticed he… Read more »
You know how you read stories of great people who are sincere in their Avodos Hashem, don’t get angry, hide from honor, are not judgemental, give a lot of tzedakah in secret, daven slowly with kavanah, learn a lot of Torah but in a hidden fashion, truly want Moshiach, soft spoken, love their fellow jew etc… and they do all this in an hidden fashion that the community don’t realize that such a great man is living in the midst. Some people even mock on how removed he is from gashmius and the simplicity of his clothing. My Uncle Yankel… Read more »
