R’ Zev Wolf (Velvel) Nisnevich, one of the elder Chabad chassidim in the last generation, passed away.
He was in his 90s.
R’ Velvel devoted his life to helping Jews in the former Soviet Union and sustaining Judaism and Jewish life behind the Iron Curtain.
After emigrating to the United States in 1974, the Rebbe told him to remain in New York and work with Russian Jewish immigrants. He gave inspiring shiurim in Russian and Yiddish.
He is survived by his wife and children Mrs. Luba Goldshmid – Lod, Israel; Mrs. Fanya Rogatsky, Mrs. Ella Chein, R’ Alex Nisnevich, R’ Lazer Nisnevich and Mrs. Esther Chein, all of Crown Heights; grand children and great grand children.
The levaya will take place Wednesday at Shomrei Hadas Chapels at 12 noon and will pass 770 Eastern Parkway at 1:00 PM.

He was a very caring, kind, aidle, generous and special man, who always had something nice to say to everyone. He only looked at the good in people and stayed on good terms with them. He would use up his day by learning and davvening. He will be dearly missed!
