R’ Shmuel Zanvil Kahan, a Holocaust survivor and brother of Mrs. Itu Lustig of Crown Heights, passed away on Sunday, 25 Tammuz, 5782.
He was 92.
Shmuel Zanvil was born in March of 1930 to his parents, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch and Zissel Kahan. His father was a Rov and Rosh Yeshiva in the town of Stramtura in Romania.
At the age of 13 he was taken along with his family by the Nazis to Auschwitz, and later was sent to other concentration camps.
His mother and five siblings were murdered when they arrived in Auschwitz. His father died in the camps shortly afterward, after refusing to eat food that he wasn’t certain was Kosher.
Shmuel Zanvil and his elder sister Itu Lustig were the sole survivors of the family.
At the end of the war, he was liberated and emigrated to Israel. He married his wife Ofra and they lived in Tel Aviv, raising a proud Jewish family.
He was a kind and loving father to his family and uncle to his extended family.
He is survived by his wife Ofra and two children, and grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister Mrs. Itu Lustig of Crown Heights.
Mrs. Itu Lustig will be sitting Shiva at 360 Crown St, between Brooklyn and New York Ave.
