Rabbi Shmuel Menachem Mendel Schneerson, an elder Chabad chossid in Jerusalem, passed away on Shabbos, 10 Tammuz 5779.
He was 91.
Born to R’ Yisroel Yosef and Shashe Raize Yocheved Schneerson, he was a descendant of the Alter Rebbe, founder of Chabad-Lubavitch, and was a distant relative of the Rebbe.
In fact, the Rebbe publicly acknowledged their family connection during a Farbrengen on Purim day at 770 Eastern Parkway. At one point the Rebbe commented, “present here is a relative of mine. Let him come up and say L’chaim.”
He married Feiga Rivka and served as a board member of Colel Chabad, the longest running charity organization in the land of Israel founded by the Alter Rebbe.
Over the years, Rabbi Schneerson worked on republishing many seforim, including Seder Haslichos V’hatfilos, Kesones Tashbeitz, Kovetz Shirei Hamaharam M’rutenberg, and Tiferes Sheb’tiferes.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son Rabbi Shlomo Schneerson and son in law Rabbi Elazar Porush, both of Jerusalem.
His funeral took place in Jerusalem.
