R’ Mordechai Tzvi Simon, a Lubavitch father and grandfather from Crown Heights, passed away on Thursday, 11 Tishrei, 5783.
He was 90.
R’ Motel was from Asbury Park, NJ, and he came to Crown Heights to learn in Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch Yeshiva in 1941 at the age of 10, along with his younger brother Jerry Simon obm, who was 8. The two were the youngest students in Tomchei Temimim at the time. Their mother was ridiculed by her friends about sending her children to a Yeshiva. She nevertheless brought both sons to the Rebbe (then the Ramash) and said, “I leave you my entire belongings.”
A businessman for many years, he and his wife Sheila were known for their open home in Asbury Park, New Jersey, which became the Chabad address in that part of New Jersey, and a base for Merkos Shluchim to the state.
After the riots broke out in Newark in the late 1960’s Rabbi Hodakov called him, saying the Rebbe asked to ensure that his family was safe, he told.
In 2014, he and his wife moved to Crown Heights. He was known as a kindhearted person, known for always greeting others with a smile and kind words.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila, and children Hindie Silver, Malkie Brennan, Moishy Simon, Yossi Simon, Shloimie Simon, and Mendy Simon, all of Crown Heights, and grandchildren.
