Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hillel Gansburg, who served as a shochet in the Jewish community in Milan, Italy, passed away on Monday, 15 Kislev 5774.
He was 67.
He was born on 4 Teves in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the oldest child of his parents R’ Yaakov and Rivka Gansburg OBM. At the age of 9 months, his family escaped from his birth town and stayed in Paris, France until he was around 4 and a half years old.
At that time, at the Frierdiker Rebbe’s instruction, his family moved to Milan, Italy on Shlichus, where his father became the shochet, helping provide the local Jewish community with kosher poultry and meat.
R’ Mendel Hillel wed Baila Risha Kalmenson and was then directed to go back to Milan and become Shluchim there. He joined his father and served as a shochet for the Jewish community.
People who knew R’ Mendel Hillel said he personified the midah of chesed. “All who knew him, knew how big his heart was and the tremendous Ahavas Yisroel he had for anyone who crossed his path,” a family member said.
He suffered a stroke in recent years and his health had deteriorated.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Bela Gansburg, their children Mrs. Menucha Mishulovin – Crown Heights; Mrs. Chana Hinda Levertov – Paris, France; Mrs. Mirele Laufer – Crown Heights; R’ Binyomin Shlomo Gansburg – France; Mrs. Shternie Pressman – France; R’ Berel Gansburg – Crown Heights; S. Zalman Gansburg – Palmetto Bay, Florida and Esther Hadassa Gansburg – Crown Heights / Milan.
