Rabbi Leima Minkowicz, a chossid of the Rebbe who worked for many decades on building and supporting the Bais Rivkah schools in Crown Heights with great dedication, passed away on Sunday, 15 Teves, 5786.
He was 85.
He was born to Rabbi Naftali Hertz and Tonia Minkowicz and was named at his bris after his paternal grandfather, a prominent Chossid. In 5706 (1946), his family was part of the ‘Great Exodus’ escape of Jewish families from Soviet Russia. After passing through several waystations, the family arrived in Paris in Tammuz 5707 (1947).
At one point, plans were for the family to move to Eretz Yisroel and settle in Kfar Chabad, but, following guidance from the Rebbe Rayatz, the move was delayed. The family remained in Paris for several more years.
During that time, his grandfather passed away and was buried in Tzfas. In 5713 (1953), they received the Rebbe’s directive to fulfill the earlier instruction of the Rebbe Rayatz that they relocate to New York, settling near the Rebbe.
As a young man, Reb Leima merited several personal connections with the Rebbe. In Iyar 5712, he underwent a medical procedure, and the Rebbe personally inquired about his health.
While learning in the Central Yeshiva Tomchei Temimim at 770 Eastern Parkway in 5716, he was injured in a car accident. As a result, he was absent from the Rebbe’s distribution of Chanukah gelt to bochurim who maintained the yeshiva schedule. When the Rebbe noticed his absence, he inquired about him and gave the yeshiva administration a dollar specifically for him.
During that period, Reb Leima also assisted Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson, the Rebbe’s mother, including driving her to medical appointments.
Reb Leima married his wife Shoshana in Elul 5725. After completing his studies in the kollel affiliated with the Rebbe’s mazkirus, he began working at Morristown Yeshiva, and soon after began working for Bais Rivkah (Associated Beth Rivkah Schools), the flagship Chabad educational institution for girls in Crown Heights.
His work at Bais Rivkah became his primary focus as a member of the administration (hanhala), and he served the institution with dedication for many years. He worked from the offices on Crown Street, overseeing the expansion to Campus Chomesh on Lefferts Avenue.
Following the Rebbe’s announcement in 5742 of the General Sefer Torah campaign, Reb Leima managed the registration and writing of the Sefer Torah associated with Bais Rivkah. Every year, when the Rebbe would give a talk to the students of Bais Rivkah, Reb Leima would have the merit to hand the Rebbe the list of names. On several occasions, he also served as the baal tefillah in the Rebbe’s minyan on the Yomim Noraim.
Reb Leima served as a longtime gabbai of Bais Binyomin on Montgomery Street, where he oversaw daily davening, shiurim, and farbrengens on Shabbos and Chassidishe yomim tovim.
He also managed a Crown Heights gemach, Keren Naftali Hertz, named in memory of his father, and received a written bracha from the Rebbe in connection with this work.
In the summers, Reb Leima would spend the season at Camp Gan Israel in Parksville, New York, where his wife served as an office manager. As such, his presence influenced many campers over the years, and he regularly participated in the annual Yarchei Kallah gathering of learning on Chof Av.
Reb Leima will be remembered as a devoted Chossid, a loyal servant of Chabad institutions, and a presence in Crown Heights. He was completely devoted to his family, to every one of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren ka”h, and was involved in every facet of their lives. They follow in his ways of Torah and Chassidus.
He is survived by his wife Shoshana Minkowicz and children, Sholom Minkowicz – Crown Heights, Yitzchok Minkowicz – Fort Myers, FL, Gitty Rosenfeld – Crown Heights, Chaya Abelsky – Crown Heights, Hirshy Minkowicz – Alpharetta, GA, Kenny Feigenson – Crown Heights, Laykie Donin – Houston, TX, Ari Minkowicz – Crown Heights and Rochie Lieberman – Crown Heights.
He is also survived by his siblings, Rabbi Yosef Minkowicz, Montreal, Chana Schmukler, Montreal, Freidel Goldshmidt, Crown Heights and

ברוך דיין האמת
I’ll miss you & never forget you.
From the moment I came and stood next to him in 1980 at the Rebbes Farbengens we bonded and he was a dear mentor and family friend for all the these years. His tireless work led to Bais Rivkah running for so many years just on his endless dedicated work. He was a great man with a superb sense of dry humor and tremendous wit. He lived and breathed his Yechus and Gezza and was very proud of his heritage. It will be hard to imagine Crown Heights and Lubavitch without such a special person. I can write pages. A hero. A longtime holder of honesty trust and wisdom. He was one of a kind. In all he did his main focus was his family who he unconditionally accepted and was so proud of. He gave people dignity and major privacy with his Gemach. There was nobody like him. Humble and just happy even when he had reason not to be.
This is so sad. May he be a Meilitz Yosher for יבלחט”א his entire family שיחיו
B”DE he was a great man. May HASHEM send the family much comfort
Reb Laima was one of the Boss’s Men in Crown Heights!
Loved my uncles for at least more than 65 years. loved his sense of humor his friendliness and always being so nice to me, always had a good word to say
Great family man and super father.
will leave and empty spot in many peoples lives
will be missed
May the family be consoled
Rest in peace Uncle Leime
Reb Leima was my cousin. But in truth, I always felt that he was more like a brother than a cousin. Reb Leima was a man of a few words, but an abundance of action.
אמור מעט ועשה הרבה
Reb Leima did a lot of Chesed שטילערהייט. He exemplified, והצנע לכת.
He should be a מליץ יושר for the whole family, and he should beseech our Father in Heaven to end this גלות החשיכה and bring משיח צדקינו immediately now.
משולם פייוול הכהן חרך
Baurch Dayen Ha’Emes!

He was a staple in our community, and a beloved Rabbi. May we merit to see him again with Moshiach Now!
I paid every dollar R Leima wanted me to pay, not because I was able to but because we fealt through him what it means to be someone working for the rebbe.
Kol kulo was rebbe.
This energy is missed today.

A simple meaning of a true chossid.

To all the minkowitzs, bde.
One area that specifically inspired me so much what the extremely high level of Kibbud Av v’Aim R’ Laimeh a”h, and his wife shetichye, had for their parents. Something that each and every one of us can truly learn from and work on ourselves to emulate.
BDE. His mother was a Chein.

Was a very special person. Always greeted us with so much warmth and inquired about the family and opened his home. So sorry for your loss. Moshiach now!
Leima will be remembered as a devoted Chossid, a loyal servant of Chabad institutions, and a steady, meaningful presence in Crown Heights. Above all, he was completely devoted to his family — to each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He took part in every facet of their lives with care, pride, and responsibility, and they continue to walk in his ways of Torah and Chassidus, which is his greatest legacy. For those of us whose families are intertwined with his, this loss is felt very personally. His values, warmth, and dedication will continue to live on through the generations… Read more »

May we be reunited with the gulah shilamiah.
May Hashem give the family strength and comfort.
Many were helped in quiet, respectful ways by Rabbi Leimeh Minkowitz. He was ibergegeben to Yiddishkeit and the Rebbe. He had a positive impact on this world and will be missed.
We just lost today an incredible Rabbi and truly hassid of the Rebbe, who allowed me during the first year of my venerable wife to conduct all the minyanim and do all the kadishim. He did allowed my daughter to be present with a mehitsa to all the services which was not easy for him as a gabbai. But he stood his ground even with every morning waiting for us to come from Manhattan. He surely did this as a recognition of what I did for our Holy Rebbe on cable television. We will miss him tremendously and will learn… Read more »

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Rabbi Minkowicz OBM. He was the best boss I ever had working with him at Bais Rivkah for many years. The Rabbi was the foundation of the school. He will be sorely missed by all. Condolences to the family & community for this loss. Family should be consoled & know of no more sorrow. Bluma Schneider, Surfside Florida
