American in the AM, Mediterranean in the PM.
Bakerie, which offers exceptional artisanal breads and pastry in Crown Heights, goes through a cultural makeover every afternoon.
The morning rush at the kosher shop begins at 7:00 AM on weekdays. Customers stop in to get coffee, house-made yogurts, freshly made salads, gourmet sandwiches, and artisanal sourdough bread with dips and spreads such as pesto, sundried tomato, homemade flavored butter, and gravlax.
They also enjoy the large selection of high-end sandwiches, like fresh seared tuna, cured salmon, and French, Tunisian and Italian cheese sandwiches.
The breakfast-lunch routine continues until 2:00 PM, selling whatever sourdough breads were baked that morning, along with croissants, Quiches and savory pastries.
And then, the place takes on a Middle Eastern vibe as it becomes the home of Zabari, an authentic hummus bar offering all vegan dishes such as the Shouk Bowl filled with hummus, tahini, spiced chickpeas and pickled veggies.
It is led by chef Noam Zabari who made a name for himself in Forest Hills, Queens, for making authentic, healthy and preservative-free hummus.
“Bakerie’s main business has been in the mornings, so we came up with this idea to double the location as a different style eatery,” says owner Danny Branover.
The hummus bar with its outdoor seating runs from 2:00 to 10:30 PM. Under the kosher supervision of the OK, it has a casual setting reminiscent of a “hafla” (pronounced chafla), Arabic for an intimate gathering of friends. Customers order their meal and take the plate to their table, without wait service.
Featured on its menu are fresh pitas, Israeli salads, tabouli salad (regular and gluten-free), house-made tahini and hummus, house-pickled vegetables, lentil soup, shakshuka and Kanafeh dessert. It also offers vegan and gluten-free specialties.
