A spokesman for the Chapter 11 bankruptcy trustee for an embattled kosher slaughterhouse in northeast Iowa told AP an auction of the company will move forward on Monday.
Gary Lewi says the auction of Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville will be closed to media. He says there are multiple bidders for the company.
Agriprocessors filed for bankruptcy after an immigration raid in May when nearly 400 people, most from Mexico and Guatemala, were arrested.
Production was shut down for a time but some lines have restarted. Before the raid, Agriprocessors employed about 1,000 people, or nearly half of Postville’s population.
Jewish residents in Postville, IA, are said to be fasting today as the Agriprocessors meat plant, their sole source of livelihood, is being auctioned off by the bank.
“We are fasting until Mincha with extra Tehilim being said,” a local wrote to COLlive. “We are calling on everyone to join in and daven for a good outcome.”
This brings me to tears. How are these families existing? The people who instigated the investigation of Agriprocessors did not do it out of good will-they did it to destroy a thriving business that helped many Yidden.
