The U.S. Postal Service presented a new stamp in honor of Chanukah 5774 at a dedication at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in New York City, on Tuesday.
It features a photograph of a contemporary forged-iron menorah created by blacksmith Steven Bronstein of Marshfield, Vermont.
Nine lighted white beeswax candles top each of the branches. The process of creating the Menorah took about a week and entailed forging 20 feet of wrought iron. It was photographed by George E. Brown of Alexandria, Virginia.
Designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland, the stamp has the word “Hanukkah” (the Hebrew word for “dedication” of the holy Temple in Jerusalem) spelled out across its top in yellow letters.
The Postal Service, with more than 31,000 retail locations, relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
Customers may purchase the Forever stamp for 46¢ each in sheets of 20 at usps.com/stamps, 1-800-STAMP24 (800-782-6724) or at Post Offices nationwide.
