Sara Chana Silverstein, a Crown Heights resident known as a breastfeeding expert and herbalist, reports the following to COLlive.com:
My 11-year-old daughter had made plans to sleep at her friend’s house for Shabbos and being a good mother, I said I would drive her. I pulled in front of the house where she was going to stay at around 7:01pm on Friday, June 5 2015.
As she got out of the car, my 18-year-old son walked her to the door of her friend’s house on President Street, between Utica and Rochester. Since there was no parking on the street, I had to double-park and turned on my blinker lights.
I was being a ‘good citizen’ and mother, two police officers approached my car.
“No double parking!” they said.
I said I was dropping off my daughter and, if they would like, I could circle around the block since my son was with her, but I needed to make sure that my 11-year-old daughter was safely in the house before I left.
To my complete surprise, the officer began writing a ticket.
I said, “Please do not give me a ticket, what I am doing is legal! This is not a ‘no standing zone’ and legally I am allowed to double-park if I am loading and unloading. I was unloading my daughter and loading my son.”
The officer yelled at me, demanding that I shut off my car and “not to leave the vehicle.” A Jewish man nearby tried to intercede on my behalf to no avail.
I turned off the car and called 911 asking them to resolve this issue since I was being yelled at and threatened by the two cops that were present. The 911 operator said she would not send another team of officers.
The officers went on and wrote me a ticket. I asked for their names and badges so I could go to the 71st Precinct to complain to the Sargent. They reacted by yelling and threatening to arrest me if I got out of the car.
Nevertheless, I got out of the car and took the pictures of the officer’s badges since they would not give me their names.
Immediately after the incident, I went to the 71st Prescient and spoke with the desk-Sergeant, a Sergeant Kenton, who was a very courteous. I asked what would he do if he were in my shoes. Would he drive away before seeing that his daughter is safe and sound?
He answered, “I have kids and I would NEVER leave my child without making sure the child got into the house safely.”
He called up the two officers who said, “They never knew I was dropping off a child!”
Sergeant Kenton told me he had ordered the two policemen to give tickets to patrons who were double-parking in front of the restaurant on that street corner.
I explained that not only have I told them that I was dropping off my daughter, but that I was down the street from the restaurant. Not only that, I would expect a police officer to utilize his senses and realize that a Jewish family wouldn’t be ordering take-out from a non-kosher eatery…
It is such a pity that 2 careless cops would tarnish the good, dedicated and important work of the entire police force in New York.
Quit your belly aching and pay the ticket.
A few years ago my son got a ticket in Boro Park. He double parked for a few seconds to unload a passenger. It was on 13th ave and there was no available spot to unload, not even at a pump. The officer told him it was illegal to double park to unload a passenger. This was Boro Park.
I agree # 35
Please call the MEDIA and tell them about your ordeal.
They will never post it
This is a non-story to them.
, because it is blacks in the wrong.
you deserve the ticket you shoudnt double park!
Stop deflecting and be honest with yourself because the comments wouldn’t be the same. You getting very emotional over this topic and I don’t know why.
She was double parked, got a ticket, had a melt down (tantrum), continue to violate the police’s order. Get clear about what’s going on here. Why take pictures of the officers, post it and continue to vent about it in this forum? Shame, Shame, Shame…. Moshiach Now!!!
Wake up and read! #65 said in his previous post on #46 very clearly that the same problem habitually exists with with white female officers who are built small! So to answer your question, yes, if, for example, it was one of these white female officers with an agenda, then of course the problem would be the same!
It still never ceases to amaze me how grown adults get soooo touchy the moment you mention a black person’s skin color.
We are talking about cops here. You bringing up a whole race is irrelevant to this topic.
We wouldn’t be having this conversation of the officer was white. Right?
SAY IT LIKE IT IS!!!!!! THE TRUTH WILL ALWAYS BE THE TRUTH, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT
Firstly I would like to congratulate you and commend you for your ability to articulate your stated position in an eloquent and pointed manner (and yes, I do mean it – NO sarcasm alert) and to have the moral fortitude to stand up to anyone who comes at you with a feeling of entitlement and / or disrespect! Bravo! You are most certainly a beacon of light to be emulated in your community. It’s unfortunate to see however, that the moment someone mentions a persons skin color, so many people get all bent out of shape. As it so happens,… Read more »
I live on that block near the jerk chicken restaurant. It is constant double parked cars for the restaurant from morning until closing time late. they even park in my driveway and get upset when asked to move…..NO COPS….NO TICKETS.WHY?
I got 2 tickets for my 2 kids not wearing seatbelts in crown heights when they were.As soon as the policeman put on his sirens I checked and my kids were wearing seatbelts!! The officers were very rude and snappy and how am I supposed to prove that they were wearing seatbelts in court!!!
I make bold to say you believed you were entitled, and so expected the cops to treat you differently. Unfortunately it did not work this time.
Quit your belly aching and pay the ticket.
Lady, lady…..you deserved three tickets…one for double parking, another for thinking you’re above the law by transgressing the officers when they requested for you to remain in your vechicle and for the chutzpah to complain about the first ticket….I agree with #45…stop whining we are not in the desert!!!!!!
Ya people like complaining when the guy doing his job I bet if it would’ve been a black or Hispanic double park in your neighborhood blocking traffic and cop passes and doesn’t do anything ya complain about that just pay the ticket just like everyone else’s what ya not special!!!
it’s sivan not adar he’s a few months late…
also, what if her name was esther?? wld be funny
I’m of African descent. It does not matter what race you belong to…there are officers in the NYPD who do not belong there and if we as citizens see and know this…why can’t the powers that be? Who administers their psychological examinations? Seems like they need to be replaced. What of their motto? Protect and serve…and it wouldn’t hurt to be courteous. I am a mother and a grandmother. I would have done the same thing as Mrs. Silverstein. People who abuse power have no right being an officer. The right thing for them to have done was to make… Read more »
I am a black person and I have no feelings of inferiority whatsoever, nor do I have a “chip” on my shoulder like #36 so eloquently (sarcasm alert) put it. I have worked along side many Jewish people, especially orthodox. And let me tell you… Many of them, not all, have that same “chip” on their shoulder and believe that everyone must bow to them. No honey. Everyone gets equal treatment from me. If you show me respect, I can find ways to relate to you. If you are disrespectful, you get back the same treatment. That “chosen” one attitude… Read more »
Life in Brooklyn is about parking tickets. It’s taxes no more no less. Sadly, female police officers that I’ve seen are overly sensitive and aggressive. That could be general but I’ve only seen black female police officers cause Brooklyn. But too, I’ve seen in my experience, which I shall not ignore despite what is currently fashionable, that black females are often over-sensitive. why that is I wont speculate but that it is I’ve seen. My experiences could be wrong but it isn’t reasonable for me to assume simply because the conclusion is thought crime. Female police officers was and is… Read more »
we are seeing race prob from black officers all the time
To# 38 I live on my life also in the same community what you’re referring to I got robbed mugs my car got broken into plenty of times and it wasn’t Jewish people.
To #37 How about driving around Brooklyn Sunday by all the churches were cars are parked on the sidewalk double parked triple parked you will NEVER see a cop there never. That’s what I’m going to videotape And make a documentary of where the problem lies
The statement from #36 below explains how many Jewish people feel about black people, whether or not they are in law enforcement. There is never a time, justified or not when getting out of your car to confront officers is acceptable. When blacks do it, they get shot and the police call it resisting and they were “afraid for their lives”. Apparently when a Jewish person does it, it is called being a “careful mother”. Everyone is racist on this world. Sorry to burst your bubbles. This shouldn’t have even been an issue, except the miscarriage of justice… 36 Say… Read more »
To #36……..u …unfortunately. ….is a sick puppy. …unfortunately keep believing that old crap….unfortunately…people who still think like u….will lose.
this is what happends when de blasio lowered standards for cops and firefighters, u got the vermin of society in positions of powers, thanks de bozo.
Maybe a council dedicated to an entire community (majority without cars) have issues that they are dealing with that are much more important that an officer wrongfully giving a parking ticket. For example helping Jewish families being wrongfully evicted from their homes, finding jobs for community members who can’t support themselves, dealing with racial violence. Just because they’re not dealing with your (minor) issue, in the public manner that you’re clearly expecting, doesn’t mean that nothing is being done and it definitely doesn’t give reason to place blame on people who give their lives to a community that bashes them… Read more »
I agree with all the venting and wrongdoing of these officers. However, I must relay what went on on Kingston Avenue that same afternoon, maybe it even proves a point (race). Seems many of the muni-meter machines were not working, and people parked on Kingston could not put receipts in the car. When the 2 women officers (1 was white/hispanic) came around to ticket, they heard the pleas, and although said you must go and find a working meter (even 3 blocks with a bunch of kids !?!), they did not give tickets. Even gave a warning to the guy… Read more »
Of course almost no one in todays “over sensitized” society wants to “call a spade a spade” for fear of being labeled a racist bigot or the like. However the sad truth is that from much past personal experience while living in NY I have seen first hand that the vast and very disproportionate majority of times that I have encountered or seen this kind of behavior with a law enforcement member, where they have a definite “chip” on their shoulder and an obvious agenda, it has been with a black officer (male or female) or a female, white, officer… Read more »
I was ticketed for the same thing and when I went to fight it the judge said I was in the wrong because I was not supposed to be double parked. So these cops did nothing wrong.
עמלקים!
Cops are not there to serve and protect they are here to keep order in corporate America .
they don’t work for you they work for the politicians
america is a corporation.!#!
At least he they didn’t shoot you.
Oh wait that’s the reality of the black man.
Would you say the same thing if the officer was Hispanic or white?
Interesting how you mention different laws for different people! Every Sunday on certain streets there are lines of cars double parked outside churches. And since none are ticketed I’m gonna assume this is allowed. I have never seen at a Jewish event or synagogue services allowances for extra parking!
Also, on 2 occasions I forgot to move my car for alternate side a little outside the ‘jewish’ area of Crown Heights. Both times there was no ticket!! That has never happened a few blocks over! If u make a mistake and forget, the ticket is guaranteed!
Amazing how this story has turned to race relations instead of the plain facts. She was abiding by the law of being able to .drop off and pick up. They were ordered by a higher ranking officer. Too much focus on race and skin color instead of the facts.
Jewish community parks where the want without consideration 4 law. There’s a rule 4 non Jewish, and rule for Jewish. I lived around Jewish communities all my life.
Those Jewish areas get less tickets than any areas in the city. Jewish community feels they r above law. Seen it many times. Ride thru areas & c all the violations on daily.
The fact of the matter is that most of these black police officers, like so many other members of the black community, have a “chip” on their shoulder, caused most often by an inherent feeling of inferiority which lends to the creation of these types of situations. When they interact with members of the Jewish community at large, who treat them with respect, yet at the same time are not afraid to show their knowledge of the law AND the procedural guidelines which the officers are legally bound to follow (all while showing, respectfully of course, that they refuse to… Read more »
Mrs silverstein you must call 311 and make complaint to internal affairs.
This is what you need to do if you want to see action.
Even more effective contact the media .
These two cops are low life thugs .
They are known in the community to demonstrate their hate towards the jewish people. They always go after the jews
They need to be thrown of the force.
A cop who cant oblige by the rules of
Courtesy professional respect needs to be thrown out
Take action now if you want to see results
Wow! A storm in a teacup. Why is everything racially motivated? The Jewish community is patrolled constantly by police, more than any other community and the first time a ticket is given to a resident the police is accused of being a bully and needs to be penalized. Yet white cops are rewarded for murdering blacks. Sure you were being a good mother but your adult son was taking is sister to the door so where was the danger
Not just that the cops ticketed her and threated to arrest her, but that you guys don’t feel comfortable dropping your kids off in front of someone’s house and letting them go in by themselves…
Don’t you realize that that is not a normal thing, and that if you are so worried about whether your kids can walk five meters alone, you need to rethink where you live?
Here is what can be done to stop this abuse: 1. Have a meeting with the CHJCC and ask the council to address this misconduct. Follow up with the council in a week or so and see if it was corrected. 2. Write a letter to the community Board 9. Asking them to investigate your complaint. 3. Send a letter to the mayor’s office requesting his liason address your complaint. 4. Send a letter to Brooklyn South, and to One Police plaza attention the Commissioner, asking both offices to investigate the abuse in the 71. And its pattern. 5. Write… Read more »
Wow – Always wondered what that rasha looked like. Now there’s a photo we can paste in the megillah!
They pick on white people especially Jews because they are not afraid you might pull a gun and kill them, as has been done many times by their own kind. She should fight the ticket
we all need DASCHCAMS or need to have our cell phones ready to record the NYPD.
LOL
I had a similar story, I was picking my wife and newborn up and the officer drove down the street the wrong way to give me a ticket while I was in the car and seeing that my wife was getting in with the new baby.
He ignored our pleas and wrote the ticket. I took a picture of him from inside my vehicle and sent that in as part of my defense (that I was in the car and parked for less then a minute) to dispute the fine.
B”H it was dismissed 🙂
This is what they stand for, no longer for safety and security only for tickets. All these new “safety laws” are new hiding taxes on the citizens, and are there just to creat new revenue for city.
A person may; however, stand a Commercial Vehicle alongside a vehicle parked at the curb at such locations and during such hours that stopping, standing and parking is not prohibited when expeditiously making pickups, deliveries or service calls, provided that there is no unoccupied parking space or designated loading zone on either side of the street within 100 feet.
Someone should video that restaurant, there are cars double parked there all the time while people run in and they block parked cars but never get tickets…
Ma’am, may I say. Just one problem with your defense. You ain’t black. So you is guilty until proven innocent.
That would be really nice
Haran
A black person getting out of a car when police told them NOT to, just like you were told, would have been shot to death.
these cops acted like thugs…we need to do something about this….
I got similar ticket from same cop and i contested it online and was promptly dismissed.
It’s NOT illegal to double park to drop off passengers.
The cops don’t know the law.
They have check off operator not present for it to be an offence.
From experience.
Why is the community council not helping? Why is there still 2 days alternative parking on each side, when most of Brooklyn has only one. They are not doing their job! They are bussy with everything else besides the important things, like fighting court cases for personal reasons, instead of perventing things like this.
Shame on them, I’m not just trying to scream out at them, but let them change, do something.
Why would you get out of your car if they told you not to???
Right or wrong, if the officer tells you to stay in your car, do not get out. You can get shot.
I had the same thing happen to me. Twice! The first time I was sitting outside my sister’s house she had 2 kids in my car! Since I wasn’t in a rush she decided to take one in at a time! A traffic cop pulled up behind me and beeped! The second child had already unstrapped herself so I couldn’t pull away. I waited for the cop to come to my window or otherwise engage me so I could explain that I couldn’t move…meanwhile my sister came running out to take the kid. She beeped again. And then again. With… Read more »
The police, regardless of race or religion, are treating citizens badly. Instead of protecting they bully and harass! One thing I noticed in this story was that the officers had been instructed to give tickets. There is too much emphasis on giving tickets! Maybe they should be prepared to respond to crime or be there to make sure the children are safe walking to their friends’ homes instead of writing tickets?!?
I don’t know what happened here, as I was not there to witness it, but I would like to advise in general not to start a power struggle with an officer. Police have a very fragile ego (not just NYPD, but police worldwide), and attempting to hurt their ego will land you in hot water. If an officer is wrong, as they were in this case (and plenty of others), don’t attempt to shame or scream at or put down the officer. Don’t get loud and defensive and state condescendingly that “what I am doing is legal”, Instead, politely state… Read more »
I got pulled over today on ocean ave & ave M by a slick top police car African American officer came over to my window I removed my seat belt to get my drivers license out of my back pocket & he has the chutzpah to tell me that the reason he pulled me over was because I removed my seat belt as I passed him so I asked him why would I remove my seat belt while passing him he was adamant lucky for me my wife & kids were in the car and they all spoke up in… Read more »
Seems to me they where originally trained as ticket agents and some how made their way into the NYPD
I had a similar story, i dropped someone off at their home and went home with out incident, however two weeks later i get in the mail a notice of a unpaid double parking ticket.
the chutzpa the cop didnt even get out of his car to tell me that he was unjustly giving me a ticket.
and go try and prove to the court that the cop never told me or even gave the ticket.
police officers do what they want cause the can…
Hey Yanky, looks like you were the good citizen who came to her rescue. kol hakavod. proud of you!!
From the ticket you can tell who gave it. Follow the PO orders polity ask for a supervisor after you explained your situation. You are very lucky not to be arrested. You can always go to the precinct or cross examine them in court.
Lol
Looks like that’s what the guys name is. Trying to live up to his namesake seemingly
if you enlarge the picture of the police name badge to read his name it will say HAMAN
Try it
BS”D wow you really held good kup and answered them nicely and courteously and were not intimidated at all and at the nerve racking time of Erev Shabbos. Nice job
That’s what happens when u hire ignorant, racist abusive ppl for policing….. And obvioulsy they have no sensitivity training for the community they work in!!!!!!! Utter failure!!!!
It’s unfortunate that the 2 police officers represented their department so negatively. Why did they not listen? Why did they yell? I have my theory, and it’s not pleasant. They need to be reprimanded and provided some kind of training on how to do the job without using it as a podium for bullying and prejudice. (I’m assuming the Jewish woman is retelling the story accurately. I hope she is.)
Seems like the black cops pick on white people and white cops pick on black people.
This is the 21st century, this should not be tolerated and everyone should be treated equal.
Good for the mother that had the courage to do the right thing and stay by her child’s side even though these dicpicable cops were writing her a ticket.
Great pictures!
