A local kosher bakery is bringing its bulk bread business to a table near you.
The Brooklyn Artisan Bakehouse, formerly in the wholesale business serving New York area kosher supermarkets, has begun serving sandwiches, pizza and their handmade breads out of their Crown Heights storefront with a breakfast menu and longer hours on the way, said owner Levi Krinsky.
Krinsky started the bakery several years ago after a bread-making hobby while working in real estate turned into a full-time gig.
He said he starts making bread — in three varieties, whole wheat sourdough, multigrain sourdough and white ciabatta — between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. every day, working from the bakehouse’s storefront at 529 East New York Ave. between Brooklyn and Kingston avenues. He said the artisan breads have a longer fermentation than usual, taking up to 18 hours to prepare.
“Everything has to be calculated beforehand,” he said.
In addition to making all kinds of kosher loaves, Krinsky and his crew began offering five types of kosher sandwiches with rotating fillings for between $6 and $8 and 14-inch pizzas for $15 in the past two weeks. In addition, the bakehouse is developing a breakfast menu with cold brew coffee on the way, he said.
The bakery has been a hit so far, he said, with word-of-mouth reviews bringing in a steady stream of customers to the bakery space with “limited seating,” he said, that he originally envisioned as a to-go operation, an idea he’s now revised.
“Everyone always came and starting eating right there,” he said with a laugh.
The Brooklyn Artisan Bakehouse is currently open Monday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., but will start new hours, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., next week, Krinsky said.
Their breads are available in Crown Heights at Kahan’s Superette, The Marketplace, Kol Tuv, Koshertown and Bentz’s Gourmet.
During the summer, the breads are available upstate – at Buy Rite located at 13 Greenfield, Woodridge NY.

A lot of people can’t have regular or whole wheat flours.. But spelt they can or feel good in. It will be a huge hit to make spelt sourdough and just spelt bread and pizza in general. Thank u!
