Chana Blumes-Geisinsky, a professional photographer from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, was honored Tuesday for helping the borough through the toughest time during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Blumes was one of 80 local residents who received a citation at a ceremony hosted by Borough President Eric Adams, who held a special “Covid Heroes” ceremony paying tribute to people who have made a difference in their communities during the pandemic.
Blumes was honored for her grass root initiative, #PickThemUp, in which she founded and led a group of volunteers who sent deliveries to the doctors, nurses, healthcare workers and staff at NYU Langone Health in Manhattan.
As first reported on COLlive.com, Blumes started the initiative after her father-in-law was hospitalized with coronavirus. Looking for a way to express the family’s gratitude to the medical staff, she began organizing and sending deliveries of food, drinks, and snacks.
What started with sending a delivery of food and snacks to one floor at NYU, soon began to grow, as family members of patients on other floors at the hospital began asking her to send deliveries to the floors that were caring for their loved ones to show their appreciation and gratitude.
The deliveries included snacks, treats, and pick-me-ups such as a variety of iced drinks, smoothies, chocolates, protein bars, meals and even flowers. These care packages were funded entirely by donations from the community.
The heroes, Adams said, reflect the diversity of the borough, where 47 percent of residents speak a language other than English at home.
