A prayer, a candle, a Torah and many more.
A new picture book by photographer Ira Berger titled “The Bell in the Crown” provides a visual glimpse into the life of Chabad chassidim living in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood with 770 Eastern Parkway at its center.
The 145-page hardcover book includes 100 photos, including a rare excellent photo of the Rebbe holding the Arba Meenim during Sukkos which was taken in 1983 by Berger, a Brooklyn native and a former Photo Editor at People Magazine.
Photos such as candle lighting on Friday night, Shachris morning davening at 770, and reciting Tehillim at the gravesite of Rebbe Chaya Mushka Schneerson OBM include captions and descriptions. There are chapters in the book on “The History Of Crown Heights,” “The Torah,” “The Cycle of Life,” “Portraits” and “The Rebbe & the Ohel.”
Featured in the book are three original essays, two by noted scholar and author Rabbi Chaim Miller and one by David Van Biema, a former religion writer at Time Magazine.
Reviewers have called this book “a front door entrance into Chasidic life,” “a display of the souls of the people photographed” and “evidence that the Torah is current.”
The book is available on Amazon.com

The book is stunning – Ira, besides for being a big Chosid, is a fantastic photographer!
Thank you very much.
looks good, much more artistic and creative than the photo exhibit/book, entitled A People Apart, or something like that which was out decades ago!
Thank you.
Was not takin in 1983. It couldn’t of been takin till at least the mid 90’s, at least. Because that part of 770 wasn’t built untill then. Plus the pic quality and the style, is of the second decade of 21st century.
i do not know where you see it stated that the picture of the raising of the torah was taken in 1983, its clearly written that the book includes a picture of the rebbe from 1983
