Zalman and Bayla, whose son was almost grabbed in the middle of the day in Crown Heights, spoke with Arutz Sheva – Israel National News about the attempt to snatch their child.
“My husband was bringing the kids to the Shabbat meal in the afternoon,” Bayla described. “A guy showed up from nowhere and tried to grab my son.”
“The whole thing took like two seconds,” Zalman added. “I turned around to him, I guess I punched him, and he just left the kid. The only thing I was thinking that he tried to kidnap the kid, and we know how it could end if he had suceeded.”
As it was Shabbat, Bayla had no way of knowing what had happened until her family returned hom. “When my kids came back, they told me ‘Mommy, someone tried to grab me!’ and I was petrified. The minute Shabbat was over I called Shomrim and the police, and they took care of it very fast. We are very thankful for the NYPD and for the Shomrim.”
She described the process of catching the suspect. “The police came to our house to asked us questions, and right away told us that they arrested him. That was very good, because my kids were very scared.”
Stephan Stowe, 28, was arrested on Saturday night. He is a resident of Crown Heights and lives on Kingston Avenue, on the block of the attack.
He has been arrested and is being charged with attempted kidnapping in the 2nd degree and endangering the welfare of a child.
The DA has asked for the suspect to be held without bail, which the judge has granted, community activist Chanina Sperlin told COLlive. Stowe is being held without bail in Rikers at this time.
The perpetrator is known to police, and has allegedly been arrested over 30 times, despite being under 30 years old.
He has also been arrested in the past for criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said.

Wish he got more hurt the perp
MAy Hasme help AMEN
Good that he punched him. Its a shame that he did not knock him out.
Would have been nice if he taught the guy a lesson
Is anything being done about all the violent criminals that live And visit 451 Kingston Ave to purchase narcotics. Both the tenants and their friends that visit that building have been committing crimes in the neighborhood of Crown Heights for to many years
The perp owned his apartment in 446 Kingston. That building has many Jewish shareholders as well many non Jewish shareholders.
“And Visit” the prep was more comfortable retreating after the kidnapping to 451 Kingston by his drug dealer’s apartment that he visits daily.
He’s really comfortable in 451 Kingston crime building
It gives a whole new meaning to “30 under 30”
It’s a hate crime jews r being attacked don’t discont that
To all those who teased “he will be out tomorrow”, have some faith:) Our community leaders and Security patrol did an excellent job at ensuring transfer of evidence & that the case is handled properly. They did not let him out, they did not offer bail, & they are holding him till sentencing BH.
The perpetrator was arrested in 2013 for attacking Jews on the subway in Crown Heights after addressing them in ARABIC and using antisemitic slurs (including: “They should have killed all of you!”).
A youtube video shows him violently fighting with police for about ten minutes before being arrested.
He was 17 years old at the time, and was charged with a hate crime.
I’m not sure why no one has addressed this.
Google: Stephan Stowe Subway
Mendel K.
I’m not sure where you got the Arabic from
He’s been living in the US all his life, he’s an African American dude. Rap sheet as long as a winter night
Google: Stephan Stowe Subway
“Stowe and a group of friends approached the Jewish man and greeted him with the traditional Muslim greeting “Assalamu Alaikum.” When the Jewish man did not respond, Stowe said the two were cousins. The Jewish man said they were not and called on Stowe to leave him alone.”
Enough is enough time to start carrying guns
We do, many of us. We also dont want to tie our lives up with years long lawsuits which ruin lives. Look a Daniel Penny… If its not on camera, you are also opening yourself up to speculation on the actual facts, who said what etc. You need to be very careful when you display/use firearm. Those who have their CCW’s know the drill and have gone through the course.
No more relying the crooked law
Buy a gun
Learn to shoot
Open carry
If you open carry you had better be absolutely certain you are able to retain your weapon at all times. Carry concealed and don’t draw until you’re ready to use it. There are plenty of videos of open carry guys getting their weapon snatched.
If Chas Visholom the kidnapper managed to take the kid into 451 Kingston Avenue, who knows?
Shmira and Shomrim are afraid to enter 451 Kingston because all the tenants and gang friends are all illegally armed.
Even the NYPD 71st Pct only enters 451 Kingston with backup of at least 4 officers.
It’s like mini Gaza in the heart of CH, this is unacceptable
If someone stole a scooter etc then of course, why risk it. But if it was a childs life on the line, Im sure they would have no issue going in.
Point is how/why are CH residents allowing one of the most dangerous crime infested illegally armed gangs to be living at 451 Kingston Ave in center of Crown Heights
B”H
How scary! But he could have tried to harm another child. The mother said she waited till after Shabbos was over to.report it. I may have done the same thing The Rabbanim need to educate the Jewish community about when one is allowed to call on Shabbos.
How about carrying a defensive weapon on Shabbos? Pepper spray? Other weapons?
Did he live in the building 446 ?
In the video, he goes in.
Yes he lives at 446… he hangs out at 451….
He lives in 446, he purchases drugs, weapons and gets high as a kite daily in 451 Kingston, by his drug dealers apartment
In the full video, the suspect casually enters 451 Kingston Ave after the attack. So one thing or another, he feels at home by that property
I would imagine you need to call the police straight away. He is a danger . What if he decided to try again. A child walking without parents or a child running ahead of their parents.
I think it was irresponsible to wait.
this fact also irritated me greatly, to wait until after Shabbos was irresponsible, and stupid.
I do hope the vast majority of my fellow kin would not hesitate to call right away.
I cannot believe how can you be so naïve?
You had The chance to tell the truth
And you rather close your eyes
Why did guy did not kidnap any black kids?
If he was not had crime
Why is no report from the community about it?
He literally assaulted a black man right after the attempted abduction, learn your facts before jumping to unfounded conclusions.
It was a hate crime. The perp was arrested in 2013 and charged with hate crimes after attacking Jews on the subway with Arabic greetings and “They should have killed all of you!”
Not the first time a Jewish kid was snatched in Crown Heights but the others happened around 30 years ago or more and nothing was done then about those perperpetrators. Hopefully, this person won’t be let loose.
Could the Rav of the community address when people should call the police on Shabbos?
Should the parents have waited till after shabbos to call?
He could have hurt another child etc.
As much as this was a very horrifying experience, at the same time, it was inspiring to see how a father walks with his two children – holding their hands – that is so beautiful and heartwarming too see – to see how natural this look can look. Yasher Koach to such a special dear father!! Kol Hakavod!
