For the first time since 1952, Camp Emunah will not be spending the summer months at their grounds in Greenfield Park, New York. Instead of the Catskills, they will be in the Poconos.
The oldest Chabad overnight camp for girls announced on Thursday night that they “secured a beautiful location out of New York State that will suit our needs B’ruchniyos and B’gashmiyos for the upcoming summer of 5780.”
The decision by Governor Andrew Cuomo to forbid overnight camps saying that it poses a threat to growing the infection rate of Covid-19 was received with disappointment in the frum Jewish community.
The directors of Camp Emunah sprung into action and are renting out the magnificent campus of Camp Tiago in Thompson, Pennsylvania, for the 7 week summer season. The camp is a 3-hour drive from Crown Heights.
“On Friday, when New York State announced that summer camps would not be permitted, this brought devastation to many campers. Camp Emunah decided that it was a must to make the summer a reality,” the directors told COLlive.com.
Camp Emunah was established by Rabbi JJ Hecht OBM along with his wife Rebbitzen Chave Hecht who has been serving as its director since its inception. They started Camp Emunah as a division of the NCFJE as the first girls’ overnight camp in the world of Lubavitch. Camp Emunah had the great honor of having the Rebbe visit on 3 separate occasions.

Perhaps camp Emunah could be used as a sort of ‘bungalow colony’ for the many financially struggling young families who have had their kids at home in small apartments for the last 3 months?
