In an unprecedented diplomatic rebuke of Israel, the United States abstained Friday on a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an end to Israeli settlements, allowing the highly charged measure to pass, USA Today reported.
The measure, approved 14-0 with the one abstention, demands Israel “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.”
It declares the establishment of settlements by Israel has “no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law.”
In abstaining, the U.S. brushed aside calls for a veto by president-elect Donald Trump who, in an unprecedented move, managed to delay the vote a day by weighing in with Egypt, the initial sponsor of the resolution.
In a tweet after the vote, Trump offered his reaction to the outcome:
As to the U.N., things will be different after Jan. 20th.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 23, 2016
A spokesperson for President Barack Obama said the decision was made upon learning that Israel is expanding settlements.
A statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the U.S. administration “not only failed to protect Israel against this gang-up at the U.N., it colluded with it behind the scenes.”
“Israel looks forward to working with President-elect Trump and with all our friends in Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, to negate the harmful effects of this absurd resolution,” the statement said.
The pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC said it was “deeply disturbed by the failure of the Obama Administration to exercise its veto to prevent a destructive, one-sided, anti-Israel resolution.”
The organization said that in the past, the current administration and past administrations “have rejected this type of biased resolution since it undermines prospects for peace.”

Even Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), who supported the Iran nuclear deal against Israel’s objections, criticized the Obama administration’s decision on Friday.
“I am deeply disappointed by today’s events at the United Nations Security Council—particularly the United States’ abstention—damaging any hope for, or progress on, an eventual peace agreement,” he said in a statement.
“The resolution seeks to create an irresponsible and inaccurate narrative, making no mention of Palestinian responsibility, either for their incitement of violence or their refusal to return to talks with the Israelis, and only serves the purpose of seeking to delegitimize Israel on the world stage,” he said.
in a way this is good because we know Israel wont stop building and living there but the guys at the UN think Israel will abide by this resolution so when Israel continues building settlements it will show them that Israel doesn’t care so it wont help making resalutions
He’s a Muslim and has done more for Muslims than Israel in his 8 years….in the 2 weeks left he will give his last “blow” and recognize a Palestinian state. He’s so predictable. Of course in the end it will only help Am Yisrael. H should allow us to see all the good enfolding in front of our eyes. moshiach now
Folks, Obama doesn’t have to be a Muslim to be destructive to Israel. He’s something far worse. He’s a left-leaning liberal, just like Jimmy Carter and all others of that ilk. What they do have in common are suicidal tendencies… being so compassionate to the cruel, that they end up being cruel to the kind and innocent.
Quite so
You don’t have to be Israeli to pay Taxes to the State either
The land is after all Promsed to every Jew
But we, the Jewish people everywhere, do need to be clear about the fact that we are looking to build Jewish sovereignty in Yehuda and Shomron, and that this is what the Torah requires and that it’s good for our people and the rest of the world. And we also need to have Jewish laws in the Israeli court system. And, we need to know that we don’t need to be Israeli citizens in order to have a say. We are Jews and the land is the Promised Land to every Jew.
Any Jew who attends and chanucka White House function this week has the responsibility to America a statement to whoever will listen, regardless of the consequesnces and express solidarity with Israel, no matter what your personal beliefs may be.
We just as an entire nation came under fire at a national level. If we sit back and just call the UN irrelevant we are being naive of the consequences that future generations will suffer!
The UN has become a kind of international BDS movement. Why don’t they do an honest job and seriously get involved with countries where murder & mayhem are actually in reality being perpetrated? Totally purposeless & meaningless organization! Unjustifiable meetings.
The miracle of Chanukah took place,,where? when? over 2000 years ago.. on “The Temple Mount”, which UNESCO says was never in Jewish hands. The Maccabees were from Modiin..”settlement” area…many, many years before Mohammed came onto the scene. Need one say more about the ignorance, and irrelevance, of the UN…the place of darkness and lies.
At least Nadler got it somewhat right this time! We realize clearly what’s behind all this & what the objectives are.
The nations are going to go against you anyway. Settlements should at least be incouraged by your own. At the very least don’t destroy what brave citizens build. Who side r u on?
The Un was created to make peace among nations. It has certainly not shown a capacity for that for at least the last couple of decades. It serves no purpose anymore, why belong, why participate if it will only bring the opposite of what is was intended to. The world is no worse without it. It needs to be dismantled not It’s current intended target (the Jewish homeland). We need to put our trust in the Abishter not a UN. Chanukah is a timely reminder of this.
#16 makes a good point, daven that he should be kept busy with anything & everything that won’t trouble Yidden!
YOU CALL IT : FINAL BLOW ?? HE HAS A WEEK LEFT IN OFFICE, WHO SAID HE WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE ??
This Rasha makes a Chanukah party in the White House. He reminds me of Achasveros who also invited the Yidden to his party but about whom it is said: he hated the Yidden even more than Haman. And yes I agree with the last comment – he showed his true colors. By the way Obama released more prisoners from prison than all previous presidents combined!! Need I say more?!
The first thing Obama did as he was going into presidency was to stop off in Postville and censure Sholom Rubashkin, and this is what he does on his way out.
This is expected when the state of Israel forgets its Divine basis. The Rebbe was NEVER for secular nationalism or the dati leumi approach of ‘atchalta d geula’
Is this accompanying picture with the article entitled ‘Obama’s Final etc.’, actually a picture of a room in the ‘White House’? OMG if it is. This is a presidential, Head of State residence? Why is the door made to look like part of the wall? I must be out of touch with current interior design completely.
ומי שעשה נסים בימים ההם ובזמן הזה, ימשיך לעשות נסים ולשמור על עמו ישראל
Hashem halt cheshbon
Obama was actually good for Israel. He did not “make nice” like many past presidents. When someone makes nice it’s difficult to ignore their requests. When one is nasty then it’s no problem ignoring them. So in effect he really strengthened Bibi. It certainly was not his intention. But we all know Hashem runs the show not this Muslim who will most likely continue to show us who he really is. For all those who did NOT vote for Trump, shame on you for believing the media hate and rhetoric. It was a no brainer.. Trump wrote a book explaining… Read more »
Their opponents don’t abide by any resolution or agreements or treaties that they don’t wish to. The UN anyway is extremely biased and we can’t expect anything in the way of support from them at all. We must be strong and know that Hashem is with us. Forget Obama he just showed his true colors, no pun intended!
Barak Husain swore that he would take out his frustration over Hillary’s trouncing by retaliating against Israel at the UN.
I think this was his only true statement in the past 8 years.
Sickening… Go Trump! May Hashem guide you to helping create peace and harmony for the Jews, especially in Israel1
Really, what difference does it make? Halevai, if only the Israeli Government would stop shooting itself in the foot and injuring the rest of us like it did in the past few weeks over Amona and continues to do each time it caves into outside pressure from sworn enemies and Leftist agitators not to mention its own mixed up insecurities over whether or not all of Eretz Yisroel including the miraculously liberated territory in the Six Day War really belongs to us. Enough already! If Bibi and his cabinet don’t want meaningless yet nasty anti-Semitic votes like the one in… Read more »
Abstaining from the vote , thereby refusing to veto is a complete reversal of American Israeli relations
Can’t wait for the end of this Obama administration.
hate to say i told you so….
Who do they think they are! Poshut meshugana
