The New York Police Departement will be holding a rare briefing for the Crown Heights Jewish community on Thursday, March 10, 7:00 PM at the Jewish Children’s Museum in Brooklyn.
The “community update” will be discussing the sudden and vicious stabbing of 25-year-old Lubavitcher Leiby Brikman by a black man on Empire Blvd. on Wednesday, February 10, 2016.
Police are said to have identified the man captured on security footage walking away from the crime scene wielding a knife, but no arrest has been made to date – a month after the incident.
In addition, the NYPD has not officially briefed the media about the case, despite requests and the change in leadership at the 71st Precinct which covers Crown Heights.
Over the past week, Deputy Inspector Norman Grandstaff, the new Commanding Officer of the 71st, has been making rounds and meeting leaders of the Jewish, African American and Carribean communities.
Grandstaff, Detective Vincent Martinos of the Community Affairs division and an unnamed detective involved in the stabbing case will be addressing the community at the meeting.
But don’t expect any answers to your questions or concerns about a violent criminal walking free in the neighborhood and able to strike again at any given time.
“This is not a Q&A,” Martinos told COLlive.com. “It is strictly an update. We do not want to compromise any leads or information but we feel the community needs an update on the NYPD efforts and investigation.”
Asked why the NYPD won’t answers questions from COLlive and the community, Martinos said: “We are not authorized by the DCPI to talk about the case,” referring to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information (DCPI) which handles media requests.
The attack on Brikman, who spent 2-weeks recovering in the hospital, is one of the 3 stabbing attacks on Jews in Crown Heights that occurred this past year.
