Finally, an arrest.
The Hate Crimes Task Force of the New York Police Department has taken into custody a black female teenager in connection with Monday’s attack on a Jewish boy.
Police said the 14-year-old female they have in custody was responsible for the attempt to mush a 10-year-old student of Yeshiva Darchei Menachem with a plastic bag.
The girl was charged Thursday with a hate crime, and was released to her father, a law-enforcement source told COLlive.
This is the second local arrest made in the string of hate crimes against local Jews in recent weeks, and in each case, according to police, an African American has targeted a Lubavitcher chassid, the Jewish Week reported.
The attacks mimic the larger violent game called “knockout” where teens hit unsuspecting pedestrians in a single punch. Assaults were recorded in several other cities — St. Louis, Hoboken, NJ, Syracuse, NY — where the victims have not been visibly Jewish.
Monday’s attack was different because it was done by two females, as reported on COLlive.com. They tried to mush a plastic bag on the boy’s face, but did not hit him like in the other cases.
NYPD Assistant Chief Owen Monaghan said the department’s crimes unit is investigating the assaults, and Monaghan promised at a community meeting this week increased police presence in the area.
