A police officer from the 71st Precinct visited Camp Machane Heights on Tuesday. Camp Machane Heights is the local biking camp for boys ages 11-14, from all schools – Oholei Torah, Lubavitch Yeshiva, Darchei, boys on Shlichus, etc., run by Rabbi Blasberg and based out of Lubavitch Yeshiva, Crown Street. Officer Schmidt spoke to the campers all about biking safety.
“As a cyclist, it is your responsibility to know the rules of the road. The best way to avoid accidents is to be prepared and be aware of other vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians around you,” Officer Schmidt explained.
The officer explained information that gave the campers some insight into the rules of the road as well as laws for bike riding in the City.
“Conflict between pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists is commonplace in the busy world in which we live. It is up to all of us to do our part to minimize these conflicts and hopefully avoid any injuries,” he said.
To ensure bicycling safety and to do your part to share the road, Officer Schmidt went over key safety rules, including: hand signals, wearing a helmet, being aware of your surroundings, giving the right of way to pedestrians, mothers and children, keeping both hands on the handle bar, obeying traffic laws and red lights.
