NYPD BICYCLE SAFETY TIPS:
Cyclists have all the rights and are subject to all of the duties and regulations applicable to drivers of motor vehicles.
Rules of the Road:
1) Ride in the street — not on sidewalks
2) Ride with traffic — not against it
3) Stop at red lights and stop signs
4) Obey pavement markings and street signs
5) Use marked bike lanes or paths when available
6) Do not weave in and out of traffic
7) Yield to pedestrians
8) Use hand signals to let drivers and other cyclists know where you’re going
9) Look and make eye contact with drivers — don’t assume drivers will stop
10) Watch out for car doors
Equipment:
1) Use a white headlight and red taillight {Required by law}
2) Wear brightly colored clothing for daytime riding — use reflective materials and lights for nighttime riding
3) Use a bell in place of a car horn {Required by law}
4) Don’t wear earphones {By law you may wear one earbud, however keeping your ears clear is a much safer choice}
5) Wear a helmet {Required by law for children age 13 or younger — as well cyclists who are working}
Children:
1) Children under age of one cannot be carried on a bicycle
2) Children must be carried in a properly affixed child carrier
3) Cyclists under age 13 must wear an approved helmet

to get rid of all these fatalities just let bikers ride on the sidewalk its almost impossible to get killed by a bike on the sidewalk, at most you could get hurt but its very likely to get killed by a car on the street
