NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited the Crown Heights neighborhood on Tuesday, visiting Chabad World Headquarters – 770, the home of a longtime community activist, and the Jewish Children’s Museum.
The Commissioner visited the home of Rabbi Chanina Sperlin, hearing from community leaders, including members of the Vaad Hakohol, about the issues facing the community and concerns of local residents.
Tisch, who is Jewish, then visited the Rebbe‘s room at Chabad World Headquarters, along with the communication room, and the Library of Agudas Chassidei Chabad, where she was welcomed and given a tour by Chabad Public Relations Liaison Rabbi Yaacov Behrman. Chabad’s Chief Librarian, Rabbi Berel Levin, provided a tour of the library; Rabbi Chaim Baruch Halberstam led the visit to the Rebbe’s room; along with Rabbi Mendel Eisenbach, head of Chabad’s Visitor Center of 770.
Joining the tour were NYPD Deputy Chief Richie Taylor, Brooklyn South Commanding Officer Assistant Chief Francis Giordano, and 71st Precinct Commanding Officer Captain Ronald Perez. Also in attendance were Rabbi Mendy Hershkop from Shomrim, Crown Heights community leader Rabbi Shlomie Hecht, Rabbi Chanina Sperlin and Eli Slavin, Community Liaison to Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.
During the visit, the commissioner spent a few moments in prayer in the Rebbe’s room, and viewed a video of former NYPD Commissioner Lee Brown receiving a dollar from the Rebbe, as well as a photo of the NYPD accompanying the Frierdiker Rebbe on his visit in the United States in 1929.
“I think Commissioner Tisch was very moved by the visit,” said Yaacov Behrman. “It was an honor to accompany the Police Commissioner and her team. We are deeply grateful for the NYPD’s professionalism and unwavering dedication to keeping our city safe.”
Commissioner Tisch then visited the landmark Jewish Children’s Museum, where she was welcomed by Devorah Halberstam, NYPD Honorary Commissioner of Community Affairs and co-founder of the Museum. Halberstam accompanied the commissioner on a tour of the Museum’s many exhibits.
