The New York City Council voted to co-name Carroll Street between Brooklyn and New York Avenues “Sarah and Michoel Behrman Way,” Thursday, June 28.
Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo, who sponsored the bill, tweeted following the vote on the co-naming “Proud to honor their many contributions to the community!”
The Lubavitcher couple resided on Carroll between Brooklyn and New York since 1983, and were the longest Lubavitcher family living on the block.
In 1988, Rabbi J. J. Hecht recruited Michoel to start Operation Survival, a drug prevention program. Even when some opposed him on the grounds that drawing attention to substance abuse would hurt the community, Michoel persisted, and, with just a handful of people, went on to save hundreds of lives over the years.
Sarah worked for HASC, the Jewish educational and clinical social service agency for people with special needs. Touching the lives of hundreds, she lobbied local lawmakers to redefine the way people with disabilities are viewed. Sarah believed that a person is a much larger than his or her disability. By focusing on her clients’ abilities rather than their impairments, she empowered them to make their own decisions, take control over their lives, greatly enhancing their quality of life.
Mayor Bill De Blasio will sign the bill into law in the coming weeks. The new sign is expected to be installed at a ceremony in August.
State Senator Jesse Hamilton, Assemblywoman Diana Richardson, and Community Board 9 wrote letters supporting the co-naming of Carroll Street in memory of the Behrmans.
Council Member Kalman Yager tweeted a photo from City Hall Council Chamber showing their son “Yaacov Behrman observing NYC Council proceedings as we prepare to honor his parents Sarah and Michoel, by co-naming a portion of Carroll Street in their memory.”
Yes they did so much. In a quiet way too. With their open home, open hearts, and always a smile…
Kol hakavod! Wonderful news! They are looking down very proudly at their children their legacy doing great holy work.. a continuation of themselves! Keep it up!
What a touching tribute to two remarkable people. Really a nice thing to do.
They used their time in this world to give to others and were role models for so many. Michael and Sarah are greatly missed. This is an important tribute to honor their lives.
The decision to rename the street was on June “28”, numerical value of “koach-strength”, shows their strength with which they worked selflessly, well deserving!!!
28 is also the numerical value of “YECHI”. May we all merit together with Michael and Sarah immediately to greet the Rebbe MH”M. and together proclaim “YECHI”
As the Behrmans OBMS touched the lives of so many, this is fitting, powerful and touching tribute to them!
Yasher koach!
Bravo! Brilliant! The WAY! So out-of-the-box TRUE recognition for these two unique & superlative Jews! “Newcomers” to Crown Heights who left their mark on every person they met and on every street they walked. Proud participants in the Rebbe’s Missions from great to small. As a team they attracted so many to Yiddishkeit being their usual fun, colorful, vivacious &chayisdike yet pure Chassidishe selves 🙂 For those of us who had the opportunity & privilege to share their great Light we are grateful that they should be remembered in such a fitting tribute… woven into the very fabric of the… Read more »

Even just for being Yankel’s Parents they deserve this:):)
Moshiach Now!
Two unique and magnificent Yidden who were totally devoted to the Rebbe and his peulos, their children and grandchildren, our community and the transformative power of Chasidus, They brought a vast amount of light into this world, and their remarkable children continue to do the same. We should each do our very best to follow “The Sarah and Michoel Behrman Way.”
Yaakov is following in their footsteps. They would be so proud.
