A critical care nurse in New York City received the first shot of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine Monday morning with other health care workers cheering and Gov. Andrew Cuomo watching via livestream.
“I’m ready. Let’s do this,” Sandra Lindsay said before she received the shot after 9 a.m. Those in the room applauded after Lindsay was given the shot.
“I feel hopeful today,” said Lindsay, a critical care nurse at New York’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
The news comes as the United States approaches 300,000 deaths from COVID-19.
Health care workers and nursing home residents were first in line to receive the vaccine developed by Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said Monday he would be among those getting a vaccine. “People will believe much more in the vaccine if the CEO is getting vaccinated,” he said Monday on CNN.
The first of many freezer-packed vials of Pfizer’s vaccine are being shipped across the U.S., after the FDA on Friday granted emergency use authorization, trigging the government’s massive distribution plans. A key CDC panel voted unanimously Saturday to recommend the vaccine for people 16 years and older and the agency’s director quickly signed it. Pfizer plans to ship 50 million doses this year.

Heroes who put themselves in harms way should be given the right to go to the front of the line. Its not just gratitude, its fair and right.
Many of the nursing home patients who fell ill with COVID-19 in such high numbers contracted it from health care workers who were younger healthier and asymptomatic. Here is a hypo. Let’s say NYC gave our free bullet proof vests as a result of increased shootings. Shouldn’t the police get it first?

Uhh, you are aware that some people will die from the vaccine too or suffer serious side effects like paralysis? Better make sure the benefit outweighs the risk. For a virus with an extremely low risk of death I’m just not sure about that. Especially with effective therapeutics

Where did you see any indication that people had severe adverse reactions in the covid 19 Pfizer trial? The only reactions were mild and expected with all vaccines, soreness, mild aches, fever. Those are not considered severe AE.

Second, unless there is evidence that the new mRNA vaccine causes cancer, autoimmune disease, or reproductive harm (there isn’t), it is you that must prove that the vaccine correlates with the above issues. People have a choice whether to get into a car or walk and what they eat or drink. Those products have liability when they cause harm to their consumers. Priority will be to inoculate health care workers on the front line . This is expected to be mandated as a condition to maintain their license and employment. The latest adverse effect ever recorded from a vaccine is guillian-barr syndrome (from old rubella shots) whose onset can start up to 42 days after inoculation.
