NEW YORK – A bitterly cold blast of arctic air will arrive Thursday along with strong gusty winds that will make for brutal feels-like temperatures dipping as long as 0 degrees.
Much of the region is under a wind advisory from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. There is also a high wind watch in effect from Thursday evening through late Thursday night, meaning there is the potential for a “hazardous wind event,” the agency said.
Winds on Thursday are forecast to clock in at 20 to 35 mph with powerful gusts up to 50 mph during the day and 60 mph at night, the NWS said. Winds that strong can make driving dangerous, especially for high-profile vehicles, and motorists are urged to use caution when hitting the road.
With such blustery winds, the temperatures – which will be well below normal with a high of 47 – are expected to feel like they’re in the single digits to near 0 degrees.
The arctic blast will continue Friday, when a high temperature of 25 degrees is forecast for the city, low 20s in the suburbs.
The weekend is looking milder, however, with the mercury climbing to a high of about 40 degrees on Saturday and into the low 50s of Sunday. Both days carry a risk of a wintry mix and rain.
