This week the Chabad House of Canterbury, New Zealand hosted the Israeli Ambassador to Australia Yuval Rotem who was in town for meetings with government officials and policy makers.
Israel does not have an embassy in New Zealand, and the Australian one serves as its unofficial substitute.
The ambassador met with Rabbi Mendel Goldstein, Director of the local Chabad center, and heard about Chabad’s growth in the country as well as the numerous activities with Israeli backpackers. “Their numbers have multiplied by tens of thousands in the last few years,” Goldstein said.
Shalom Ber Spitetzky, Goldstein’s assistant, introduced the ambassador to the six bochurim who arrived this month to help out with programs.
At the two new Chabad locations in the city the ambassador was honored with affixing the mezuzos.
