“A holy man who inspired millions of Jews”
Both houses of the New York State legislature, the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate passed Resolutions of “119 Days of Education” in honor of the Rebbe, “A holy man who inspired millions of Jews.”
In the Assembly, it was sponsored by Assemblyman David I. Weprin. In the Senate, it was sponsored by Senator Zellnor Y. Myrie.
The New York State Assembly and Senate were opened with a special prayer in honor of the Rebbe. The New York State Assembly was opened by “Zoom.” The New York State Senate was opened in person.
During the opening of the New York State Assembly, Assemblyman David I Weprin spoke about the leadership of the Rebbe and the contribution of the Lubavitch movement the world over.
The Rebbes Message
In his prayer, Rabbi Shmuel Butman, Director, Lubavitch Youth Organization, stressed that the Rebbe wants each child, regardless of race, religion, color or creed to have a good education and to know that “There is an eye that sees and an ear that hears and that the world is not a jungle.”
The Advice of the Rebbe for opening the United States Senate in Washington
Before he opened the United States Senate in Washington in 1991, the Rebbe told Rabbi Butman: “Take a Pushka (charity box) with you and let everyone see what you are doing and let them know on what money should be spent for.”
Rabbi Butman did the same during the opening of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly.
Rabbi Butman asked the Senators to participate by offering one dollar in the Pushka “This is not a fund-raising effort” he assured, “for if it were, we would ask you for much more than one dollar, this is an effort to do an act of charity, goodness, and kindness.”
It was indeed heart-warming to see how the Senators lined up, with spirit and enthusiasm, to put a dollar bill into the Pushka. “They are doing what the Rebbe wants,” said Nicolas Tishler, Special Assistant to Senator Zellnor Y. Myrie. Many expressed their sincere personal appreciation for a message of guidance hope and encouragement.
