During the summer months, there is a minhag to learn Pirkei Avos on Shabbos afternoon. The Rebbe would often dedicate Sichos during the summer farbrengens at 770 Eastern Parkway to provide insights and explanations into the Mishnayos.
The Rebbe stressed that one should choose at least one Mishnah from the weekly Perek and study it ‘in depth.’
One of the unique qualities of the Rebbe’s explanations on Pirkei Avos was that he would connect the ideas in the Mishnah to the life and personality of the particular Tanna who authored it.
As we begin the cycle of Pirkei Avos again, COLlive.com presents a 6-week course on Pirkei Avos by Rabbi Moshe Kesselman, Chabad Shliach and Rabbi of Congregation Shaarei Tefila on Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles, California.
Each week, one Mishnah will be explored and explained based on the Rebbe’s Sichos and teachings.
This week: “I’m right, You’re Wrong – Let’s Make Peace.”
Hillel said: ‘Be among the students of Aaron. Love peace, pursue peace, love the creations, and bring them close to Torah.
Why is it necessary for Hillel to introduce the concept of peace by saying that one should be ‘among the students of Aaron.
Peace is not as simple as it sounds. People will always have different opinions. The Yeshiva of Hillel had Hundreds of arguments with the Yeshiva of Shammai. Yet, Hillel somehow remained the Icon of peace.
This Shiur explores in depth how Hillel charged his students to debate and argue and remain in the ultimate state of peace.
An in-depth discussion on why the Halacha is almost always ruled like Beis Hillel.
