New Torah Written In Hopes For ‘Medical Miracles’

A new Sefer Torah was started Wednesday in the merit of a speedy recovery for those affected by coronavirus around the world, and in the effort to stop the deadly illness.

Spearheaded by Crown Heights businessmen R’ Berel Junik, R’ Zalmy Cohen and Rabbi Shloimy Greenwald, the writing of the Torah by Sofer Rabbi Moshe Klein began at a home in Crown Heights.

The Torah is being written with the haskama of the Crown Heights Bais Din Rabbonim Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba, Rabbi Yaacov Schwei and Rabbi Yosef Braun, and Rabbi Levi Garelik of Crown Heights and Rabbi Chaim Schapiro of Morristown, NJ.

Organizers explained the significance of writing a Torah in times of widespread illness.

“In the year 5512 (1752), many men, women and children became critically ill with different sicknesses, in Mezibuz – the city of R’ Yisroel Baal Shem Tov.

“The people came to the Baal Shem Tov and cried bitterly, beseeching him to pray on their behalf but he responded by quoting a section of our daily prayers, ‘and [may] the service of Israel Your people always be [according to your] will.’

“He explained that it was up to the people to make it Hashem’s will to annul the terrible decree. How so? With letters of Torah – (1) by saying words of Torah and Tehillim and (2) by writing a Torah with everyone’s participation.

“Instantly, someone decided to have everyone participate in the writing of a Torah, the Baal Shem Tov too participated and immediately the sick began to recover. This Torah was known as the Miracle Sefer Torah,” they wrote.

The people involved hoping to create a ‘medical miracle’ with this Torah are creating a website to allow every individual the opportunity to be a part of this great zechus, they said.
