Inspired by the famous “Miracle Sefer Torah” story of the Baal Shem Tov, when the entire town of Mezibuzh participated in the writing of a new Torah and was saved from a plague – a similar idea is happening in California.
The community of Maayon Yisroel Chassidic Center in Los Angeles, led by Rabbi Reuven Wolff, joined together to write a new Torah dedicated to Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Chassidism.
This new Torah, accompanied by the sofer as well as all who want to participate, will be picked up in Jerusalem and begin its trip back to Los Angeles.
Traveling throughout Eretz Yisrael, Ukraine, and the USA to daven, dance and farbreng at Kivrei Tzaddikim, the sofer will write additional letters in the Torah at each location.
The first stops include the Kotel, Kever Dovid HaMelech, Meoras Hamachpela in Chevron, the holy gravesite of the Arizal in Tzfas and of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in Meron.
From there the group will travel to Ukraine to visit the great Chassidic masters, the Maggid of Mezeritch, the Alter Rebbe, Reb Avraham HaMalach, Reb Zushe of Anipoli, Reb Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev, R’ Yaakov Yosef of Polnoye, R’ Pinchas of Koretz, the Mitteler Rebbe, Reb Michel of Zlotchev, Reb Aharon of Karlin, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and others.
The trip will culminate with a Shabbos of singing, dancing and farbrengen with the Baal Shem Tov in Medzybuzh.
The Torah will then continue with Rabbi Wolf to New York, where letters will be written by the Rebbe, and then finally, on Lag b’Omer, the new Torah completes its journey to Los Angeles, coming home to Maayon Yisroel, a Chassidic center founded and dedicated to spreading the light of Chassidus and the Baal Shem Tov. It’s very first reading will be the Aseres Hadibros, on Shavuos, the Yartzeit of the Baal Shem Tov.
