This past Sunday, the main Sephardic Shul in Crown Heights, Merkaz Sefarad Chabad, received its very own Sefer Torah, dedicated by Mr. Boris Evelkin of Millennium Elevators and written in memory of his late father, Mr. Nochum Evelkin ob’m.
The writing of the Torah was commissioned approximately one year ago by Mr. Evelkin with the assistance of his personal Rabbi, Rabbi Dan Dashevsky of F.R.E.E. and was intended to be dedicated in Mr. Evelkin’s shul in Manhattan Beach.
Recently, a close friend mentioned that that particular Synagogue already has numerous Sifrei Torah and that Mr. Evelkin should look to dedicate the Torah in a Shul that does not yet have a Sefer Torah of its own.
With the assistance of the Sofer, Rabbi Gad Sebag of ORAITA, the suggestion was made to present this new Torah to the Merkaz Sefarad Chabad.
By Hashgacha Pratis, Rabbi Dashevsky’s wife Leah has been Rabbi Eliezer (Lazer) Avtzon‘s personal secretary at the Global Jewish Assistance & Relief Network and is a close friend of the Dashevsky family.
Rabbi Avtzon is also the President of the Board of the President Plaza Condominiums whose elevator is serviced by Millennium Elevators.
And Rabbi Gad Sebag is a member of the Merkaz Sefarad of which Rabbi Avtzon is the Rav, and has been loaning Sifrei Torah to the Shul for many years and helping to fix their old Sifrei Torah free of charge when in need of repair.
The Shiduch seemed to have been made in Heaven by Hashem himself, and in a private Torah dedication ceremony attended by family, friends and associates of the Evelkin family and the congregants of the Merkaz Sefarad, a beautifully written Sefer Torah was welcomed to its new home.
Proud of you !!
friends from brazil
We can all learn from Boris who did this from the depths of his heart to honor the memory of his late father. Just the way he spoke so passionately with his sister at his side, thanking his parents for all they did for the family and honoring his mother at the same time.
It was truly beautiful and emotional.
Boris, May you go from strength to strength!
Rabbi Dan. As I always tell you: NEVER stop doing what you are doing now!
I’m so pround to know you and to see you doing such great things!
