For years, many have been asking the same question: “Where can a girl living in Crown Heights go when she needs a place to be?”
There is finally an answer to this question.
Introducing: The Space Crown Heights.
While Crown Heights serves as the homebase for thousands of girls, for many, it is difficult to find a consistent sense of community.
The Space was created to address this experience and ensure that all the young women and teenage girls in Crown Heights always have a place open and available for them, to find community and connection. The Space ensures that no girl in our community is left searching for a place to be.
Instead of relying on malls, restaurants, or coffee shops in order to have a place to work, study, relax, unwind, connect with friends, or to simply be, now, the girls of Crown Heights can walk into The Space at any time of day, and any day of the week, and have the space they are looking for.
The Space is located at 537 Empire Blvd. It is a beautiful, airy and warm venue, furnished with cozy couches, workstations, protected computers, and plenty of books and games.
Some of its features include a music corner fully equipped with a piano, guitars and ukuleles, an art corner stocked with paints, markers, coloring books and canvases and a kitchen filled with an abundance of healthy and delicious snacks, drinks, and delicious coffee.
Check out some pictures below for a more visual idea of what The Space looks like!
The Schedule:
The Space opens every morning at 9:30am with a daily Tanya class for all young women in Crown Heights. Fresh pastries and hot coffee are provided. Throughout the day, women who are post-sem or are in their 20s, enjoy the warm and peaceful atmosphere while doing their
remote work, davening, playing piano, learning, or meeting up with a friend.
A place of connection; it’s easy to make new friends when spending time in The Space.
In the afternoon, The Space changes gears, filling with teenagers from all high schools in Crown Heights, coming with friends or by themselves. Teens can be seen doing homework, chatting with friends, reading, playing games, playing guitar, or just enjoying The Space.
With nightly recreational programs at 7:00 pm (including: art, dance, beading, self-defense, drum circles, and more), girls know that if they are ever looking for something to do in the evening, there is something exciting waiting for them. Even while programs are in session, The Space lounge remains open and available until it closes at 10:00 pm.
The Space is a full circle experience, where many of the women who enjoy The Space during the daytime, feel passionate about giving back to The Space community in the afternoons and evenings, through leading programs, mentoring individuals, or tutoring highschool girls.
“I began coming to The Space for the daily Tanya Class, and to have a space to do my school work”, says Risa Freeman (21). Within a few days, she volunteered to share her creative passion and warm, friendly personality, making a beading program for the teens on Monday nights. “The Space is the warm sense of community I need in Crown Heights”, says Risa. “It gives me so much, and allows me to give so much. I feel so grateful”.
