Rabbi Sholom Kubichek and his wife Malki recently moved on Shlichus to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. They joined the 5 Shluchim already on the ground in the city.
Chabad has been active in Azerbaijan for decades and today it is the epicenter of Jewish life in the country. The Ohr Avner Chabad Jewish day school, established in 1999, attracts tens of Jewish pupils each year and is well regarded in the city for its high quality of education and care for its students.
“Rabbi Kubichek will be engaging with the families of the students, involving them in other aspects of Jewish life”, said Rabbi Shneor Segal, Head Shliach and Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Azerbaijan.
“He will also be in charge of the adult education wing of the Chabad House with a steady stream of Torah classes and learning programs. Besides working alongside her husband, Malki will also be teaching in the school.”
The new shluchim arrived just as a slew of new projects had got underway. To provide kosher food for the many tourists who frequent the city, Chabad recently opened a kosher restaurant; a new floor was added to the ever-expanding Chabad preschool, and the abovementioned Ohr Avner school underwent a stunning renovation.
In honor of the new year, Chabad’s activities are being ramped up to provide for all the holiday needs of the Jewish community.
Rabbi Menashe Althaus, Kubichek’s father-in-law and a veteran Shliach in Kiryat Tivon, Israel, congratulated the couple on their move: “We wish them much success and look forward to welcoming them back to Israel with the coming of Moshiach!”
