Chief Michael Kemper, recently appointed the new NYPD Chief of Brooklyn South, met with Crown Heights leaders to discuss concerns of the Jewish community and local issues.
The new Chief visited with members of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council at the home of Intergovernmental Liaison Chanina Sperlin on Tuesday.
Chief Kemper, formerly NYPD Detectives Deputy Chief who also served in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is replacing Chief Brian Conroy, who recently retired.
The Chief is “no stranger to the Crown Heights community,” Chanina Sperlin told COLlive.com.
The new Chief related that he was stationed in Crown Heights in 1992 as a rookie cop in the NYPD, and received dollars from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, he told Sperlin and Eli Cohen, Executive Director of the CHJCC.
Kemper said that he is dedicated to keeping the Jewish community safe, and especially with the High Holiday season approaching, he will work hard to make sure Crown Heights is well protected.
While out and about on the streets of Crown Heights, the Chief, who is Jewish, was stopped by a young student who offered to blow the Shofar for him.
The discussion at Rabbi Sperlin’s home centered around the upcoming Yomim Tovim and the coverage that the Police Department will provide to the community and the thousands of anticipated guests for the High Holidays.
“Chief Kemper is a friend to the Jewish community,” Sperlin told COLlive.com. “We are looking forward to working with him to make sure the 71 Precinct has the right manpower that they’ve had in the past to continue to protect the community.”
