A group of Chabad Shluchim in Arizona announced on the auspicious day of Gimmel Tammuz the opening of a new Chabad Mesivta for young bochurim.
“We are opening with one class for ninth-grade, specifically Shluchim’s children and out-of-towners,” they told COLlive.com.
The Mesivta (high school) is geared for boys who are growing up in a Shlichus environment yet are proficient in gemara, they said. It is designed to transition elementary kids to grow into young bochurim through gradual adjustment.
The Mesivta is being spearheaded by Rabbi Sholom Ber Lew of Glendale, Rabbi Yossi Levertov of Scottsdale and the Shluchim in the Phoenix area, under the auspices of Arizona’s Head Shliach Rabbi Zalman Levertov.
It will be housed at Chabad of Scottsdale located in the upscale city east of Phoenix and there will be a dormitory for the students, covering all of their spiritual and physical needs.
“With a focus on a community service program, the Mesivta will serve as an incubator for the next generation of Jewish leaders by instilling within its students a strong sense of responsibility to the Jewish community, through community outreach and learning,” they said.
Guiding its opening is Rabbi Shalom Ber Halberstam of Lubavitch Mesivta of Chicago, as well as Rabbi Shmaya Shmotkin of the Mesivta of Detroit, Rabbi Moshe Perlstein of Chicago and Rabbi Dr. Yoseph Shagalow who has consulted many Yeshivas and individuals.
The Shluchim are asking the public to support the founding of the Mesivta – $350,000 is needed within the next few weeks to make this happen – at ChabadofScottsdale.org/donate
