New floodlights were installed on Kingston Avenue between Eastern Parkway and Union Streets on Thursday, illuminating a major walkway and hub corner for thousands in the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn.
The new lights were obtained and coordinated by Sholom Ber Goldstein, a community activist, who has been working tirelessly for decades to beautify and upgrade the safety of the neighborhood.
The new lighting was installed on the side of the Chabad Headquarters building with the assistance of Meir Palace of Dynamic Electric, and with the approval of Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky of Merkos. Local residents contributed to cover the cost.
“The city lights never gave proper lighting to this most important walkway, that is the meeting place for thousands after Shul,” Goldstein told COLlive. “It’s unbelievable this lighting was never done until now,” he said.
Goldstein has also been petitioning the city to re-install brighter lights throughout Kingston and Albany Avenues, which had been removed 6 months ago.
Goldstein says he expects the lighting to be restored on Kingston Avenue in the next two weeks, and that he is disappointed in the amount of time it is taking for the city to keep its promise, even after many meetings and much discussion.
“It’s critical that the city take care of this as soon as possible,” Goldstein said. “The summer is over the kids are back, daylight hours are getting shorter, and the city has missed another month of promises,” he said.

Yashur koach!! So nice and bright!!
If each shopowner bought a fixture like we all have on oour porches – less than 30 bucks! – and affixed it to t he storefront, we’d get plenty of light. It’s piddling amount for the individual shopowner, and we can use the city to help about other things
Should have been done long ago! Shop owners can install lights to automatically go on at night to make it safer for everyone
Thank you for thinking about the safety of our children and young adults !
I’m from out of town walking in between union and president street on Kingston two nights ago a black man was standing by the tree in front of crown Judaica and moved towards me , it was practically pitch dark he could have done anything terrible to me I was petrified
This is a danger and sakono to all
The pitch darkness is a shame on the CH community to tolerate
A shout of thanks to SB Goldstein to taking action

Very dangerous to walk in the no light streets but Kingston and Albany are most walkable streets for evening /late night . Soon school starting and many kids will walk alone after 5 pm…Lights are the must.
