The Mercaz Gan Yisroel school in Flatbush, Brooklyn now known as Bais Yaakov Ohel Sarah, recently celebrated the Chanukas Habayis of their new building.
Coincidently, the building which for many years served as a Catholic school, bears a resemblance to the famous Chabad Lubavitch headquarters 770 Eastern Parkway.
Gan Yisroel of Flatbush was founded 13 years ago by Shluchim Rabbi Schneur and Sarah Mendelsohn, with only 5 students.
The school soon began to flourish, growing student by student, and with much prayer, hard work and dedication now boasts over 150 students from preschool to grade 6.
The move to the new building was a momentous occasion, celebrated with a Chanukas Habayis attended by parents and supporters.
“It is so beautiful to be in a building that in the past was used by a non-Jewish school but now, Baruch Hashem the walls vibrate with the words of Torah learned by the pure souls of Yidishe kinderlach,” said Mrs. Mendelsohn.
“Here, our dreams, hopes and vision, for our students to become erlicha girls with midos tovos, a strong emunah and bitachon in Hashem and with a solid education so that they can become productive parts of our society, are coming true,” she said.

In the interim, there was another Jewish school here before this one. It was called the Sarah Dabbah School. I know this as this is the third year my daughter is in the program from the Jewish Center for Special Education (formerly… Read more »
