The New Haven community came alive on Sunday as residents gathered to celebrate Purim with a grand communal event. The festivities, held on a blocked-off street, provided ample space for the entire community to partake in the joyous occasion, drawing in a crowd of 350 people.
The event was a vibrant affair, offering a wide array of activities and entertainment for attendees of all ages. From moonbounces to balloon art, a fiery fireshow to sweet cotton candy treats, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Children delighted in face painting, a Hamantash race, caricature drawing, and capturing memories at the photo booth.
Notably, featured booths were manned by local 5th grade girls, showcasing their talents and community spirit. Younger children took to the stage to perform captivating shows, while hourly Megillah readings kept the essence of the holiday alive throughout the day. Delicious BBQ meals were served, providing sustenance for the celebrants to continue enjoying the festivities.
Expressions of gratitude and awe filled the air as community members marveled at the unprecedented nature of the event. One grateful mother shared her sentiments, remarking, “So great for family time. Thank you all who were involved!”
Another community member reflected on the significance of such communal gatherings, saying, “What beautiful memories of community, joy, and togetherness you have provided for all of our children. How magical it must be for them to grow up in a place where Purim is so special.”
The event was spearheaded by Yudi and Rosie Gurevitch together with Rabbi Mendel and Beila Prescott, of The Shul on Colony Road in partnership with Abi Vail and Yanky Borenstein of the New Haven Kollel as well as Yaakov Atia. Special thanks to Zev Sandman for securing all necessary permits.
The event highlighted the rapid growth and vibrant spirit of the local community. As the festivities concluded, anticipation buzzed for the next communal endeavor: the welcoming of a new Torah at the Shul BezH, accompanied by a grand siyum in less than two weeks.
