Shnas Hakhel is around the corner and the talk in Chabad communities in Canada, California, Florida and other places where Lubavitchers live, outside of Crown Heights, is focused on taking the family to the Rebbe. Some want to go in Tishrei, despite the challenges, while others opt for other dates. Ultimately, the question is: Where will we stay?
If you just started thinking about this in recent weeks, well, Eshel Hachnosas Orchim has been thinking about this already since last Tishrei!
Right after last Simchas Torah, dozens of Eshel apartments were reserved for Tishrei 5783 – Shnas Hakhel. At that rate, it was obvious that the Eshel building on Kingston Avenue would not have enough room for the many guests who would be coming throughout the year. They had to buy another building and enable additional families to come to the Rebbe.
The director of Eshel, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hendel, spoke to some real estate agents, asking them to search for something in close proximity to 770, and to let him know as soon as they knew of a building up for sale. The residents of Crown Heights know how hard it is to find a house for sale; all the more so, an entire building. But when you are working on behalf of the Rebbe’s guests, you merit special heavenly assistance.
Very recently, he was told of an apartment building on Eastern Parkway that was purchased by a Lubavitcher businessman and renovated. Eshel signed a contract on the building but in order to complete the process, they need to raise two million dollars. A campaign was begun under the heading, “Eshel is Expanding – For You.”
In this new hachnosas orchim campaign there is a double benefit:
Being a part of the zechus of bringing people to the Rebbe, as well as being able to participate in huge raffles:
Raffles in the Copper Track:
Donors who give more than $120 (10×12) will be entered into a raffle for a double-occupancy room in the Eshel building for this Tishrei (or $3600 cash).
Donors who give more than $180 (15×12) will be entered into a raffle for two tickets to Eretz Yisrael.
Donors who give more than $360 (30×12) will be entered into a raffle for a family suite in the new building for this Tishrei (or $7700 cash).
Donors who give more than $770 (64×12) will be entered into a raffle in which every member of the lucky family will receive a dollar from the Rebbe!
Raffle in the Silver Track:
With a donation of $1200 you will receive a gift, without a raffle, of a credit for the new building of 40% of your donation.
Most worthwhile is the Gold Track:
With a donation of $18,000, you will receive as a gift, without a raffle, a family suite for a week, for the next six years. You pick the week!
For the Residents of Crown Heights – On a Personal Note:
As residents of the Rebbe’s shechuna, we have the privilege and obligation to host these thousands of guests, about whom the Rebbe once referred to as “my guests!” Indeed, the residents of Crown Heights open their homes to guests, some offering places to sleep, some for Shabbos and Yom Tov meals. But there are Chassidim for whom it isn’t feasible or comfortable to host in their homes, and sometimes, we cannot host our relatives. For many reasons, the Eshel building is the best arrangement for guests and this is a special opportunity for you to be partners in this superlative form of hachnosas orchim!
As the Rebbe himself said in the sicha of 5733:
“The advantage of a hotel is obvious – instead of the situation as it is now, when even asking for a cup of water makes a guest feel he is bothering the host and family who are hosting him, so that even when hosting graciously and wholeheartedly, the guest is left feeling somewhat uncomfortable etc. And this is aside from the discomfort of the guest who, because he has to restrict himself and consider his host regarding times for sleep and getting up, times for davening and learning, etc. that he needs to adjust himself to the host’s schedule – this is obviously difficult considering human nature.”
If you win a room or suite for Tishrei, you can allow your guests to stay in the Eshel building or redeem the winnings with cash.
