The 71st Precinct of the New York Police Department has been assigned a new commanding officer, replacing Deputy Inspector Thomas Smith.
The new chief will be Captain Ronald Perez, who is coming from the 63rd Precinct in Brooklyn, where he served since April 2024.
Perez has previously served at Patrol Borough Staten Island, Youth Strategies Division, 71st Precinct, 83rd Precinct, 72nd Precinct, and 120th Precinct.
He will be tasked with protecting and serving the central Brooklyn area which contains the southern portion of Crown Heights, Wingate, and Prospect Lefferts Gardens.
Most notably, the 71st precinct is home to Lubavitch World Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway, an active hub for locals and visitors from around the world.
At a recent meeting, the new Chief met with Chanina Sperlin of the Crown Heights Jewish Community and Eli Slavin, liaison for Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.
“We are looking forward to working with the new Commanding Officer Perez to ensure the safety of our community,” Chanina Sperlin said.
