Netanel Menachem Eitan, an IDF soldier from a Chabad family in the Ramot neighborhood of Jerusalem who was injured in battle in Gaza, passed away on Sunday, 27 Kislev, 5784.
He was 22.
Growing up, Eitan was a student in the Sha’alvim Yeshiva and was devoted to the Rebbe’s teachings.
Lieutenant Eitan was a fighter in the ‘Gefen’ battalion in Unit 669. He died on Sunday from his wounds after he was seriously injured in battle Friday in the Gaza Strip.
Elyashiv Eitan, brother of Lieutenant Eitan said: “It’s terribly difficult, the loss is unimaginable. They were ambushed, there was an explosion and he told the person who was with him to ‘stop,’ and he was shot.”
His brother related that in recent letter he had sent his family, Netanel Eitan had said that, “It is his merit to fight for this country.”
“He was the glue of the family. It was important to him that we make our parents happy, every Friday when he came home he would make sure that there would be a good atmosphere, that we would sing Shabbos songs together,” Elyashiv Eitan said.
Chaim Arental from the Zichron Menachem organization, which supports children with cancer and their families in Israel, said of him, “Netanel was one of the main volunteers in the organization who would regularly donate platelets to children with cancer and volunteered at children’s camps abroad. When I hear about our dear soldiers who are killed, we hear about special people…this loss is so difficult to explain.”
He added: “This is a man who for four years was devoted to assisting Zichron Menachem in every way. He was a counselor, he donated blood, and gave all of his free time to help others who are battling illness. Just days before he was sent to the battlefield in Gaza, he wrote to a friend that in January he will be traveling to Dubai to help run a camp for children with cancer. The trip is scheduled to bring 120 children with cancer accompanied by doctors, nurses, caregivers and security personnel to Dubai for respite. This tragedy is a tremendous loss to Zichron Menachem.”
