“You never know when you’ll encounter someone who is having thoughts of suicide.”
Neshamos.org, a mental health organization set in the heart of Crown Heights, has shouldered the responsibility of addressing this very need. For the second year in a row, Neshamos has teamed up with SPCNY, Suicide Prevention Center of New York from the office of mental Health, to bring the ASIST Workshop to our very own community. ASIST, the Assisted Suicide Intervention Skills Training Workshop, is a 2 day intensive program that covers all grounds when it comes to matters of suicide. This program provides it all- ranging from education on the motivation to commit this act; the risk factors involved; how to spot out signs of someone who may be contemplating suicide; and ultimately- how to immediately and competently intervene in moments of danger, G-d forbid.
“The message I got from the workshop is that people who are dealing with this feel so deeply alone in this world, the main thing they need is someone who can sit with them in their moment of need and in their time of darkness that they are working through,” says one workshop attendee.
Thank you to all those who attended!
