Mrs. Sylvia Reiter, mother of Dr. Levi Reiter of Crown Heights, passed away on Monday, 1 Iyar, 5778.
Mrs. Reiter was a matriarch to many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who are Erlich Yidden all devoted to Torah and Mitzvos.
Great Bubby, as she was lovingly called, was loved by so many and touched lives of those she met.
In her dignified, beautiful way, she raised her children along with her husband Mr. Sam Reiter A”H and lovingly accepted and supported their paths to become Ba’al Teshuvahs.
In the 70’s a group of parents created a support group seemingly to foster better relations between parents and their children who were becoming Chabad. In reality, their goal was to turn parents against Chabad and to ultimately remove Chabad Houses from college campus.
They placed an ad in the NY Times to invite participants to join.
Sylvia and Sam were asked by a Maskir of the Rebbe to infiltrate the group to express how wonderful they feel that their children are on the path to more Mitzvos and to report back to the Mazkir on the group’s activities. After several meetings, they were ultimately rejected from the group because of their positive attitude which went against the group’s goal.
However, Hashem intervened and the group was disbanded with Sam and Sylvia’s intervention.
The Levaya will take place today, Tuesday, at 11 am at Shomrei Hadas in Boro Park. Burial at the Baron Hirsch Cemetery in Staten Island.

From the time I met great bubby, I knew she was special. I didn’t know that if it weren’t for her, I might never have encountered the mitzvah mobile at SUNNY Stony Brook. That was my first contact with Chabad and Rabbi Teldon. Then came Gan Yisroel, HASC, Baltimore, n You! You and my beautiful grandchildren, I can thank your grandmother and Hashem for my Yaakov having you in his life. May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion.
She lived many long, fulfilling years, and was zocheh to see many generations of yiddishe chassidishe nachas ka”h! may Hashem bentch her beautiful family with navhas, gezunt, and moshiach now!!!
I know the Reiters for years, but they never revealed this story of Dr. Reiter’s parents secret mission and mesiras nefesh for Chabad and the Rebbe. Wow! What a legacy.
Leah bas Dovid was literally a dignified women through and through. I’m so proud to be one of her “gems” that she valued so much! “Gems” is also known as her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren 🙂
I really miss her so much
We, as all of Great Bubby’s great grandchildren, will forever remember her kindness, love, humor, and sensitivity. We will continue to love her so much and try as much as we can to emulate her ways!! I will really miss you a lot, great Bubby!
