Mrs. Shterna Sara Kalmanson, who was sent by the Rebbe on Shlichus to Southern Ohio and has connected many to Yiddishkeit, passed away on 11 Nissan 5779.
She was 69 and suffered from an illness.
Mrs. Kalmanson was raised in Montreal by her parents Mrs. Riva and her husband Rabbi Heshel Ceitlin, the mashpia of the Chabad community there, as well as a traveling mohel and shochet.
On 5 Elul 5729, she got married to Rabbi Sholom Ber Kalmanson, who learned in the Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch in Montreal and about whom the Frierdiker Rebbe once said, “a chossid vet er zein” (he will be a chossid).
After their marriage, Rabbi and Mrs. Kalmanson lived in Montreal where he served as the director of the Beth Rivkah Academy school for girls and helped establish the Pardes Chana overnight summer camp for girls.
In 5733, the couple was sent by the Rebbe on Shlichus to Cleveland, Ohio, to run the Chabad center there. In 5735, the Rebbe instructed them to move to Cincinnati which has a large assimilation rate.
Over the years, the Kalmansons have led many programs and activities to spread Judaism and Chassidus around the large city.
For over 20 years, they fought a legal battle to allow a large Menorah to be placed on a public square to the dismay to liberal Jews and other groups. Chabad eventually won the case.
She is survived by her husband, Rabbi Sholom Ber Kalmanson, their children Mrs. Chana Alte Mangel – Blue Ash, Ohio; Rabbi Yosef Kalmanson – Mason, Ohio; Rabbi Mendy Kalmanson – Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs. Menucha Majeski – Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs. Devorah Leah Pinson – Detroit, Michigan; Rabbi Shneur Kalmanson – Chicago, Illinois; Mrs. Shaina Levin – Postville, Iowa; Mrs. Chavi Schechter – New Orleans, Louisiana; Mushky Kalmanson – Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her mother Mrs. Riva Ceitlin of Montreal and siblings Mrs. Brocha Teitelbaum – Crown Heights; Mrs. Zelda Yarmush – Montreal, Canada; Mrs. Esty Benshimon – Montreal, Canada; Rabbi Yossef Yitzchok Ceitlin – Toronto; Mrs. Devorah Leah Mishulovin – Los Angeles, California.
She was predeceased by her father and her brother Rabbi Aaron Lazer Ceitlin OBM, the known Mashpia and one of the Rebbe’s Shluchim to Tzfas, Israel.
The levaya will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, at 11 am at 770.
