Mrs. Sarah Chanowitz, a longtime Crown Heights resident, passed away on Monday, 16 Sivan, 5780.
She was 86 and passed away due to complications from coronavirus.
Sarah grew up in Boro Park, Brooklyn, and after her marriage to R’ Yisroel Chanowitz obm, settled in New Haven, Connecticut.
They later moved to Crown Heights, where she supported her husband who was a community activist and was very instrumental in building up the Crown Heights neighborhood.
As a builder, R’ Yisroel was known for his dedication to building up the neighborhood. He was one of the first who started the trend of rebuilding Crown Heights again after people moved out of the neighborhood.
Her son Benzion Chanowitz is the founder of the Bais Yisroel Torah Gemach.
She is survived by her children, Benzion Chanowitz – Flatbush, NY and Chaye Freyda Kohl – Highland Park, NJ.
She is also survived by her siblings, Ray Schildkraut – Crown Heights and Esther Holler – Flatbush, NY.
Shiva will be until Monday morning.
